Given a new lease on life as humans they defend humanity against the Abyssals. The Abyssals are largely monstrous beings that may or my not represent the USN, be sunken fleet girls, or actually be civilized.
There are around 153 Kanmusu currently (not counting upgrades which fill up extra spots in the pokedex), representing a variety of warships.
These 2 are a couple of the more difficult to find destroyers. All the girls range between absolutely adorable and drop dead gorgeous, and it's ill advised to limit yourself to just these 2 if you find yourself interested. There are 151 more you might find you like better.

Oh, and the attraction to Shimakaze is purely based on how skimpy her outfit is, while Amatsukaze is popular for being associated with her.
I think that about covers it, drop by a Kancolle thread on /a/ sometime if you want to see people bicker over wh's the best, or /jp/ if you want to learn a bit more about the game.
Oh, and there is an anime with a second season in pre-production currently, but I recommend taking it with a few grains of salt or watching it while you still don't know anything.
