Everyone's experiences will be different, but I think it's fairly common that you can fall out of it and lose consistency - I got my own first guitar about three months ago, but before that I had played the piano since... 10 years? But I had really bad consistency with it so I didn't make very good progress. With my guitar I've been playing almost every day for about an hour, on the other hand, so this has worked out much better, obviously!
With that background, some tips I could give would be to try to get the basics down. You mentioned fiddling around, and that can be really fun, but ultimately you will feel like you run out of tools to work with. Doing that, you also set up small goals you can sequentially overcome, and that's also quite rewarding and motivating, which is especially useful while you're just starting out so you can establish a habit. I followed the study programme at
justinguitar.com and it has helped me tremendously. It follows a really logical progression, so it's highly recommended!
As you learn more, don't forget to balance the technical training with fun stuff such as learning songs and, again fiddling around. It keeps you motivated and it can be an amazing feeling to play along to a song you like!
Other than that, just general tips for staying motivated would be to use a "don't break the chain" chain or use something like the pomodoro technique. I use both and they help a lot! Without them, I often procrastinate, because I'm "too busy". But it's all a matter of remembering to prioritise really! They're especially useful for music since consistency really is key. Playing 15 minutes each day is really superior to playing 2 hours once a week.
Does that help any, or is there something more specific you're concerned about?
Either way, good luck and many Fuwa Fuwa times to you!
