When SAO came out we all saw how popular it was and for some reason lots of anime fans held disdain toward SAO simply brcause it was popular. Next comes the aspect of acceptance. What most people desire most in everyday life is to be accepted by their peers. To be accepted, they try to do what they see is deemed "cool" by other fans. Thus they go and nitpick every single aspect of the show, far more than any regular show. This makes SAO look worse than it really should.
In the end, you could tske any show and beat it to death by picking at every little slip up.
SAO does have its fatal flaws, but it gets a bit too much hate for what its really worth.
