FIrstly, I'm afraid you misunderstood. I, like you, believe Asuka is far stronger as a character than a mere sex-doll or a flat waifu. That's why comments like "her character revolves around Shinji" or "what she needs is Shinji's penis to be saved" really pisses me off. I think she's an independet character, with her very own issues and who must learn to overcome them, if neccessary, alone; by her own.
However, I said that about "the man she chooses to be with" in response to those two anons who where discussion about Asuka becoming someone like Misato. Thus, I said Asuka could become a superficial, sex-obsessed woman like Misato in case she hookep up with a low-quality man more interested in her boobs than in herself as a person. That's why, being with men like Touji or Shinji, who prove to be quite unreliable as men (they're too young, however), could somehow affect Asuka in a negative way. And, in the end, she would become a German "Misato 2.0".
But, again, I'm of your same opinion that Asuka is a rather strong and independent character. I think, however, that having a stable and supportive partner (out from the cast, most likely) would help her fight her traumas and issues. I'm not saying that's a condition 'sine qua non' for her to get better, but it would definitely help.
