You can mount them directly onto the wall (if you have drywall, I would recommend finding and mounting over at least one wall stud for support), so floor space is a non-issue. Some can go for pretty high, but if you keep it simple and shop around you can find some good deals. You don't have to spring for the high-end material, but I would advise splurging on something decent instead of settling for the cheapest option you can find. You don't want anything that's just going to collapse after a couple months. I just installed some recently to hold some books and art, and I love them. Best of luck!
