What people don't usually understand is that Asuka is not looking for a "romantic" partner for the sake of it. She's desperately looking for someone who could save her from her torment; in other words: to demolish her Wall of Jericho.
Thus, pairing her up with Kaji because of his "cock" is quite ridiculous. The same goes with Shinji: he proves to be utterly useless for her. Asuka does find some appeal in his extraordinary piloting skills, but what she's looking for is not a pilot, but a saviour; and Shinji, who can't even help himself, is of no use.
That's the big deal with the ships involving Asuka: either they are completely delusional, or disgusting, or are ridiculous self-inserts. And that goes for Kaji, Shinji, Touji, Kaworu or whoever.
Asuka is an individualist girl with grave problems and terrible traumas. Reducing her character to penis sizes of the men around her is far from accurate. If not, please think for a moment: do you think Asuka would have opened herself to a thug, like a whore? That would be quite humiliating, wouldn't it?
