>>3058165Right now, we have two big problems: habitat destruction and climate change.
Nobody really knows what to do about the first one, as far as I can tell. So I'll tell you three basic things you can do about the other one.
1. Don't fly so much. If you want to reduce your greenhouse gas emissions, this is the simplest step you can take, with a big impact. (The biggest is "don't have children," but the accounting on that one is tricky. On the one hand, there'd obviously be no greenhouse gas emissions in the future if nobody had kids, so there's some sense in which we're responsible for the emissions of future generations; on the other hand, it'd be ridiculous for you to blame all your greenhouse gas emissions on your parents, so there's some sense in which we aren't responsible for the emissions of future generations. It's convoluted.)
2. If you want to take some sort of positive action, support women's education and family planning in poor countries. This is one of the most effective moves you can make to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and it has other benefits. Embarrassingly, I don't have a charity to point you at. Sorry.
For more information on climate change in particular, have a look at
http://www.drawdown.org/solutions-summary-by-rank3. Vote for politicians who will take action on environmental problems. Yeah, I know, gb2
>>>/pol/, but individual action really won't be enough. We need a global framework to do it, and that means politics.
If you'd like to donate to an environmental charity, I'd suggest the Environmental Defense Fund or the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. Both do good work and are well-respected in scientific circles.
