yandere used to mean a character that was so much in love that it lead to obsessive and/or insane behavior, but yandere-chan was already insane before she met her love, she is just using it as an excuse to kill, the intro and the fact that the game is more focused on killing than romance supports this claim (this is why she's more kuudere-yangire than yandere) and the way she's ruined it shows too because in the western world she's used as THE prime example of yanderes. google search yandere now and you'll be greeted by a ton of edgy fn@f fan chars or jeff the killer lookalikes who are "totally yandere like yandere-chan!"
