It also feels wrong when they put them in visibly rich western backgrounds, when a russian does it it feels fitting because living in poverty, coldness and lack of sunlight must do things to your mind so that you seek actual refuge in cute anime girls (there's a reason they have such a high alcohol and cigarrette abuse problem), whereas the first case feels more like a person participating in what for him is nothing more than an ebin meme. The later can just go out enjoy the world anytime he wants whereas the russkie (or eastern european) is stuck in his freezing hell with commieblocks surrounding him from every direction.
The situation is akin to the whole waifu culture, you have those who you can tell actually love their waifus and then there are those ebin memesters who do it because it's the "in" thing to do.
Not that I can stop people from doing it but yes, it bothers me.
