Even back in S1 where the ship was pretty weak there was something about them when they interacted with each other that I adored. I forget where in S1 where Nico and Maki interacted where I thought it was adorable, funny and sweet.
Keep in mind I wasn't into shipping or yuri or anything like that. I didn't even know what those words meant but I knew that loved seeing NicoMaki together.
Also it's pretty blatant in S2 and the manga where they hang out all the time like Nozomi and Eli.
