Maybe the family was really into Orientalism or they had important clientele in Japan. The only problem with that theory is what happened when WWII rolled along, surely Japan wouldn't take kindly to Americans (even fully assimilated ones) living in Japan but whatever. At the end of the day it's just a theory.
However in the book it's revealed that Marnie was living in the manor during WWI but I'll just count that as a difference between the book and the movie. Everything about the party scene in the movie screams roaring 20's to me, not 1910's.
