When you finish the anime, I highly recommend you watch the Netflix Movies just to get past the awful cliffhanger the anime ends on.
...and then I demand you read the manga. From the beginning, no skips. As much as people like to praise the '97 anime, unfortunately it just doesn't do it complete justice. You will not regret reading through what you've 'already' seen, trust me.
Also, don't skip over the movie's til the end either, because the '97 anime leaves out a crucial character that is needed for the final episode/last 30 minutes of the movie to make sense.
