In Princess Tutu, the characters were eventually fighting against the story itself to avert the tragic ending that was laid out for them. Duck was willing to suffer and sacrifice everything for a happy ending for everyone. Basically saying that a story doesn't have to end in tragedy and be all grimdark to be a compelling one.
Ironically, people often forget that the original Madoka anime did end with hope overcoming suffering and despair.
