They fleshed it out a bit from the book (which I'd read going in) but the ending was still abrupt.
Not surprising. I learned afterwards that Diana Wynne Jones died before finishing it. It was still a work-in-progress and pretty thin despite extensive illustrations.
Given that, I wonder why they chose it as a project.
The watercolors behind the closing credits were an obvious attempt to wrap up the loose ends. They help -- somewhat.
I thought Mary and the Witches Flower was much better, despite being a non-Ghibli film.
