The handful of times that I've been there gave me the impression that there was a vocal minority of people who, due to the lack of their own artistic merit or otherwise, have sought to discourage beginners by belittling their work. Though, I've heard that the furry art general (unfortunately tagged /fag/) can be rather welcoming and its members would gladly provide any feedback you throw their way. The beginner /beg/ general also has a neat list of resources for learning fundamentals.
