Watched the documentary, I think it's pretty clear it's more or less him relating how he was able to grow and change, and the kind of growth he had to do. Something like a "hey I did this, you can do it too, we're all gonna make it vros"
If I had to go out on a limb, it's more about him being unable to let go of EVA, everyone just took that sort of thing as a personal attack.
I don't think truly hated Eva, not with how he spent years on the last one, he just doesn't wanna be someone who only does EVA. And as for money, this is Eva we're talking about. He'd make bank putting out anything, so he didn't need to polish it as much as he did.
