1. gendo physically created the entire world of shin seikei evangelion using the golgotha object, and shinji by way of the third impact and it's consequences phyaically created the world of the rebuilds. both of these events happwn in "the real world"
2. both shin seikai evangelion and rebuild of evangelion are a mental coping mechanism shinji created inside his own head to grieve his own faults. none of the events prior to the final scene (the train scene) and the live-action parts of EoE happened in "the real world"
what we do know is regardless of if those events happened in universe or not, the entire thinf is a very good representation of Anno creating those animes, for exactly the same reasons shinji created them. as escapsim.
and ultimately, the thing that beought shinji back out of it, and the thing thay brought anno out of his own struggles, was both his wife (Mari) and finally finishing evangelion once and for all. so if there was any "point", then it is, as i said before, to move on from evangelion
i really dont understand how people still don't see this when it was spelled out beautifully in end of TV, a bit more on the nose in EoE, and is almost literal dialogue in the rebuilds.
