ACen has way bigger attendance numbers and has been going on longer. AMW has been going on for only three years as of 2013. Despite all the crazy rumors about the CEO of AMW floating about on Tumblr, I had a great time at the convention with all my friends. Word to the wise.. do not pack 7 people into one hotel room at the Regency O'Hare. Even with two beds, rooms are cramped as all hell and the bathroom is tiny.

Both cons use the Hyatt Regency O'Hare as their primary venue. ACen is just more popular and well known. The best part of AMW however was Steam Powered Giraffe. Those guys were freaking AWESOME.

WHY THE FUCK NOT!? It's the only anime convention in the Detroit area for god sakes. There aren't many other cons in Michigan to begin with and Youma is the biggest one around by far.

Yup. I believe next year is it over 4th of July weekend as it was this year but feel free to check the website to make sure of that. They have a pretty good guest list and Steam Powered Giraffe is coming back again with two concerts that weekend! :D

A regular badge for the con this year was $30 and a Platinum was $100. Not bad if you ask me. I splurged for a Platinum this year myself. Saved me a ton of time when lines got unholy levels of massive for SPG related things.

The area the convention is in is centered around the RenCen/Cobo Hall area by the river. Probably the safest area in Detroit by far. I highly doubt you'll get shot.

Sage to get things back on track here. Not looking for a fight. Let's keep talking about Youmacon. Not all of Detroit is the nasty ghetto. The riverfront area is actually very safe. Mugging does happen sometimes though but that's about the extent of anything unsavory. The RenCen and Cobo buildings themselves are very safe and I've always seen security walking around when I've been to Youmacon in 2011 and 2012.

I live about 6 minutes out Detroit and it isn't just the city infected with wanna be gangsters and shit, I've had some truly rancid people walk in and out of stores and been so confused at how people can be so rude
