Have any of you ever volunteered for a convention before? How was it? I'm volunteering for an anime convention here in a few weeks and I just wanted to see what experiences you guys had.

I work security for some conventions in the southwest occasionally. It's usually pretty relaxed, though you'll get the occasional retard that tries to bring in a real sword and just says "nah I promise I won't hurt anyone".

But you just take their shit and then they're on their way. What position are you volunteering for? Something on the floor, giving out directions? How big is the con?

I believe there's Security, Registration, Panel, Vendor, Live Events, Video Gaming room, and Video room positions. I believe newer volunteers gets to dip their feet in the water and try out all the positions. I'm a really tall guy so I wouldn't be surprised if I were to do Security and the setup/tear down of the vendor rooms and whatnot.

The venue is medium/small sized. The con has been going on for 10 years now and has reached upwards of 3,000 people over the entire course of the weekend sometimes. I'm expecting this year to be a little over 2,000 for the weekend.

It wasn't all that bad, but I was under 18 during that time, so some stuff they couldn't have me do (like helping unpack and set up stuff in the dealers room).

I was always given a schedule that had to have [X] amount of hours of work, but sometimes you could get moved if if were needed elsewhere.

I had to defend the furry meetup from hecklers when I'd rather of been one of the hecklers, which really sucked. But I also helped out one of the dealers when one of their people had something come up and had to leave. The guy let me pick out a free t-shirt for helping.

tldr; Sometimes you have to do shitty stuff you don't want to do or interact with the worst of the worst, but cool stuff can happen sometimes, too. Also, free room. If you really want to try it, I say go ahead.

I did it before in Mexico, to be more precise, in Tamaulipas. The conventions here are so much different than the ones in USA. Almost every month there is one but they're more like a flea market rather than a con. I do it because the idiots here can't go to others conventions and they eat whatever "convention" we have here. Basically my work was random things like moving stuff to the stage or giving ID to staff who sell their stuff. At least you get to be with the convention guest but most of the guests are mexican VA from mainstream animation series like Dragon Ball (it's still a huge thing here), Naruto, Death Note and The SImpsons.

Note if staff seem unhappy to you as an attendee, their department probably isn't fun to work at. Unless you want to take over from the inside and become the con king.

I've volunteered twice for Galacon. The worst thing that has happened to me was I had to guard a back room for hours on end and be bored to tears. Generally, volunteers end up missing most panels, but get to have other kinds of fun and that feeling of importance.
