>>2819794I understand the argument. It is true that "all creative work is derivative". And maybe this is just me being old and unwilling to accept that there's no difference between AI being trained on something and people developing fundamental skills by copying their favorite artists, but I feel like there's a fundamental difference between the way I learned guitar and bass by playing my favorite bands' songs until I was good enough to write my own stuff, and the way people churn images into an AI until it can proficiently imitate them.
Both are derivatives at the core, but there's a question of whether someone working for years to develop those derivative skills distinguishes what they make as original work. It's a question of whether having an AI do that work for you holds the same artistic merit.
And maybe it does.
