Roadbikes are amazing WTF experience from Dutchfag

No.1339726 View ViewReplyLast 50OriginalReport
Supposedly the Netherlands is a shining example of what biking culture should be in a country.

But 90% of people and cyclists don't even know what clipless pedals are. All their lives they've just ridden heavy steel 20 kg upright mamabikes with fat tires that top out at 20 km/h. Most people here get mad as fuck at cyclists who use roads when a terrible cobbled cycling path is available,

so did I, and I hated ycling because of it, yet I just did it like everyone else here because everyone does it

Until tonight, when for the first time in my life I put on some actual cycling gear with padded shorts, went on a smooth roadbike, with a helmet (first time in me life), with tiny tires. First I was amazed at how light the bike was (10 kg WTF). Then I felt how clipless pedals works and was even more amazed (why no one told me about them? Not even me parents knew). I just did a 20 km/h lap at 30 km/h average and it felt amazing. I sprinted once to 50 km/h and WOW. This bike is so nippy it is incredible. I was fllying through the streets. now I understand why in foreign countries every one rides more modern bicycles. Now I understand why cobbled paths SUCK.

This made me realize that in the Netherlands we are in fact very behind in cycling. The Dutch bicycle fleet is incredibly outdated and people are completely unaware of the more efficient forms of cycling. My mind is still blown at how fun this is.

Study: Most Car Owners Wish They Didn’t Have to Drive

No.1462723 View ViewReplyLast 50OriginalReport
More than half of drivers wish they had another option for getting around besides their cars, according to a new poll from Data for Progress — a startling revelation that busts the stubborn myth that most Americans simply prefer driving to greener modes of transportation. In fact, the survey suggests that when we put cars at the center of our planning decisions, we’re not truly serving the will of the people.

Of course, we’ve prioritized car travel in almost all aspects of American life anyway — and that choice has stuck a lot of would-be walkers, cyclists and transit users with car commutes they often don’t want.

And over half of all car users agreed with the statement, “I would like to use public transportation more often, but it is not as convenient to or available from my home or work.”

https://usa.streetsblog.org/2020/03/19/study-most-car-owners-wish-they-didnt-have-to-drive/

>Even the researchers were surprised to find that 65 percent of Republicans agreed with the 90 percent of Democrats who think the U.S. needs better public transit.

>Like study after study has shown us for years, Americans don’t just idly wish they could take the train to work someday — they want their cold, hard tax dollars to fund more transit now. In a country that spends just 20 cents out of every transportation dollar on transit, respondents said they’d support cutting the road budget by 13 cents and giving it to buses and trains instead.

Hey /n/, this me, inside my car! I drive my car to work in the morning and then use it to drive back to my home in the evening. I use my car because it is more reliable than currently existing transit and because there's not enough infrastructure for me to do otherwise. Is there anything I'm doing wrong? Also car thread

>be me

>I'm keeping pace with him without even trying
>he keeps looking back at me
>literally every 5 seconds he looks back
>looks visibly distressed, as if afraid that he is going to be passed by a girl on a mountain bike
>he keeps looking back every 5 seconds or so and this goes on for several minutes
>we get to a climb
>he slows down to an excruciatingly slow pace so I pass him immediately
>when I get to the top of the hill I look back out of curiosity, he is only a third of the way up at best
>a few minutes later, stop at one of my favorite rest stops, a nice park overlooking a lake
>about ten minutes later, fat guy passes by
>stares at me as he passes
>a few minutes later, get back on my bike and resume my ride
>not long before I've caught up to fatty again
>he looks back and sees me
>he immediately stops, gets off his bike, turns it upside down, and starts spinning the wheel as if inspecting it
>clearly pretending to have mechanical issues to justify stopping, when really he just doesn't want to be passed by a girl on a mountain bike
>ask him if he is okay or needs help with his bike
>"yes I'm fine thanx. just having a bit of a rest"
Pic related, looks almost exactly like him.

World’s biggest airplane

No.1314070 View ViewReplyLast 50OriginalReport
But It’s just two planes taped together right? Is this cheating? Would you want to fly on this thing. The idea of building the world’s largest plane just for the sake of it seems fraught with hubris to me and bring to mind the Titanic, Icarus flying too close to the sun, and the Tower of Babel. Enjoy your world’s largest deathtrap, jet setters. I’m fine staying here in bed.
