Buy Bike General (last thread is dead)

2018 foil 20 vs 2020 supersix
both used, foil is ultegra and 7.5kg(16.5lbs) , supersix is 105 and 8.3kg (18.3lbs).

supersix looks nicer in real life tha in pics- so its basically a newer heavier worse groupset (but i believe better frame design, this is just a hunch due to several testimonies ive heard), vs an older beter groupset bike.

what should i do? foil is a bit more than the supersix, but not by far.

Got this guy today, Trek FX-1.

Guy at the shop said it was basically the Honda Civic of bikes, a reliable workhorse for commuting.

This one is refurbished but used to be a rental bike, it's got some scars and personality. I named it Sherman after my boy uncle Billy.
Pretty hype to use it to get around town, i haven't had a bike since I was twenty and i forgot how freeing it is compared to public transit.

it will have slightly worse performance which can make it more exerting to pedal through, but it won't be worse in terms of being uncomfortable to sit on. it's personal preference, some people don't like any bumpiness that comes with narrower tires. with the same tires, it will be fairly similar to a road bike. but i think a road bike will be fine. in the first example with the bad road, if you ride on roads like that a lot you may want 28mm tires, but it's personal preference, you might want 25mm tires to get the most enjoyment out of the smoother roads and then just take it easier on the worse roads.

FWIW, every time I've taken a bike through international customs they've dismantled it looking for drugs or bombs in the tubes. You have to pay for large shipping or buy a bike specific bag. In the end the best thing is to buy it there and sell it the week you leave.

I wanted to pick up a nice 531 frame suitable for touring but I’m wondering if it’s a lost cause? Specifically 531, or just nice old steel? There are a lot of good old sport-tourers floating around. I think they're generally great bikes. If you can find a steel road bike, your size, with canti mounts, get it. They basically aren't any low end ones.
I have a custom 531 'ST' (super touring) frame and I really like the ride, loaded and unloaded although i've never toured on it or really weighed it down.

You might have a decent sportier sport tourer, or a 27" to convert for more clearance, that is decent, but that is more fraught. Avoid 531 Comp, even with rack mounts, as it's noodly as all hell. It's going to be a bit of a crapshoot really with a caliper braked classic road bike to see which is stiff enough for a load. Many will be outright scary but touring on an old road bike was very common and lots are designed for it. Especially fine with lighter loads and nicer roads.
I wouldn't worry too much about frame condition, especially on a bare frame. It's harder to hide (or not notice) flaws on something stripped. Hairline cracks would be issues moreso than dents. I wouldn't worry about dents in steel. Or rusting out but that's very rare and surface rust is usually a non-issue. A front end collision having bent the fork is probably the most common issue.

Mercians and Bob Jacksons are fantastic. That's a great idea. Just don't buy one of the ones with a threaded steerer. That faux-retro shit pisses me off. It's fine on a classic bike but threadless is just superior and sometimes aesthetics be damned. If you need a quill stem, they are lovely, buy an old bike.

Here's this whole bike. I really hate how it's setup. It was my dads but he never got into drop bars or rode it really and now he has an e-bike. I'm going to overhaul it and change lots of stuff when I can. Not sure in what direction though.

The problem is people don't know what they mean by touring nowadays. There's carrying your bodyweight in camping gear touring with a tent and a sleeping bag and a mess kit and a stove and and every single imaginable tool and spare, and all that shit and pretending you're on an expedition through the sahara to the north pole.

Then there's the equivalent of light backpacking or being a tourist on vacation by bicycle mostly carrying clothes, snacks and essentials and staying at hostels and eating meals at restaurants touring.

A road bike is usable for being a tourist on vacation kind of touring. A sport touring bike with wider but fast tires, fender clearances, a neutral geometry, and long enough chainstays to prevent heel strike with lightly loaded panniers, is ideal. A race bike is a road bike optimized to win races. A sport touring bike is a road bike optimized to cover longer distances, possibly over consecutive days, with a pleasant mix between comfort and speed.

I agree. What i'm saying is that a sport touring bike is ideal for sport touring, and can be used for somewhat loading touring. While a race bike is ideal for fast road riding, and can be used for very light sport touring. So a race bike is for sport touring, in the same way a sport tourer is for touring, in that it's not ideal or its intended purpose, but it's capable of it.

When someone says 'touring', I assume they don't mean weight weenie credit card touring with no tent or cooking equipment.
But I also assume that they don't mean yak butter, winter gear, laptop in a pannier, kitchen sink type touring, where you'd really want the extremely heavy duty and not at all good to ride unloaded pure hardcore touring bike you suggest.
Both of those things are extremes to me.

'Touring' I assume, means 3 spare pairs of underwear, a tent, and a small stove, etc etc, maybe a paperback. But something that can be done on a bike which is, as you say, still fun to ride unloaded. You should be able to lift your loaded bike over a fence.
This is the bike, for the sake of rambling, that I assume that anon is asking about. And it's not a 531C race bike. It's something like my Pete Tansley.

It's not weight weenie credit card touring. This is the problem, you think it's binary. It's not. Sport touring is like road tripping. A camping bike is like taking a land rover camping or to some exotic place. Sport touring is perfectly capable of touring sans camping, or touring with ultralight camping style loads.

Sport touring is similar to what you'd take on a vacation if you packed on the lighter side, it's not weight weenie ultra minimalist. It's the kind of luggage you would take if you were visiting multiple cities by train and staying over a day or two instead of the kind of luggage where you get a taxi from the airport and stay in one hotel for a week.

This is what shitloads of people do when they buy "touring" bikes instead of camping. There are shitloads of people that don't actually camp but still travel hundreds of miles. They don't actually go in the woods or be bike hobos for 6 months.

That's between sport touring and touring depending on the weight of the tent and stove. Super light 1 person tent with solid fuel stove can be done with sport touring, especially if you don't bring lots of clothes. Sport touring would have no problems with an ultralight backpacker camping load. If you take a large tent with a propane stove and a frying pan on the other hand.

aren't all 531C bikes essentially race bikes? Even if they have a few rack bosses.
I maintain that such bikes are not great for loading, even relatively lightly, although are perfectly fine for loading very lightly as are all road bikes.

I mentioned sport tourers originally to mean canti-braked ~32mm+ clearance road bikes like mine. And drew the distintinction between those sport tourers, and the sportier caliper braked kind.

No and no. It's just on the lighter side of sport touring and standard for the typical road bike. There were both lighter tubesets for racing, and on occasion heavier tubes were used for racing for stiffness.

Cantis aren't magic. They just let you get decent braking performance with really wide tires. There is nothing wrong except somewhat worse braking with caliper brake sport touring, and they are completely capable of actual touring, not just weight weenie credit card touring, sans camping.

If you're not carrying camping gear, it's not 'actual touring' even though it might be a form of touring.
And many caliper braked sport tourers, and regular road bikes are capable of actual actual touring with camping gear, as I said, it's just slightly fraught finding one good for it, and a canti braked sport tourer almost always will be because it's almost always suitable in other regards also.

It's not actually what you said, and you're full of shit anyways. You never even properly loaded up your 531st bike and you keep insisting all 531c bikes are the same and race bikes like a moron.

You can load up a full 30-40 pounds in front low riders on a road bike, you need longer chainstays to keep decent handling with a rear rack, like on a sport touring bike, to carry 10-20 pounds on the rear. A bike can support your fat ass, it's not going to balk at an extra 10 pounds as long as it's attached securely and somewhat low. It's going to ruin the handling if you put it on a race bike and the weight is behind the rear axle though. No, loading a sport touring bike is not the same as loading a race bike.

Giant saddle bags are too floppy and high up. Panniers on short chainstays have their own problems with handling that no amount of extra stiffness will fix. Half the load a camping bike is expected to take is up front on low riders which are completely unaffected by frame stiffness.

No, it actually isn't uncommon at all. It's also a meme that only really took off in the 80s, and it still doesn't reflect the reality that many people don't actually do the bike hobo thing when they tour.

That's the fucking point you idiot. It's half or less of the gear once you cut out the ridiculous camping shit modern touring bikes are designed to carry. It's still not nothing. People carry a suitcase or backpack worth of shit with them when they go on vacation. A sport touring bike works well with that kind of load.

Genuinely yes. Maybe not now because this is all somewhat bitter for some reason but I think what you're describing sounds good fun and you should definitely post about it and show pictures etc. I don't think touring or cycling in general should be a pissing contest at all.

And I don't know how many times i've said it, but i'll say it again. Trying to define wildly ambiguous terms is only for the sake of discussion.
