Canti levers pulled less cable than V-Brake levers did. That's why V-Brakes combined with Canti levers would feel way too soft and have a huge stopping power, but the space between rim and brake pad would be too small to not rub when the rim was not 100% trued or you just had some flex druing riding.
There are still adjustable levers on the market that work with both systems.
