The wet weather grip on nice road tires is insanely good. Knobs on tires only make a difference on surfaces they leave an imprint on (dirt). Look at moto gp tires, totally slick, and leant right over.
Road bikes are also more capable on rough terrain than you'd think. The difference really is that a road bike is intended to be -ridden-. Your muscular effort supports your body. If you're used to just cruising, and sitting on a bike then a road bike is an ass hatchet, and big fat tires will suit much better.
