If you have a french fit, with a fistfull of seatpost, you can achieve very minimal saddle-bar drop on a classic road bike with natural looking proportions.
The other part of it, is just using bars with short flat ramps, and no drops to the hoods. Like noodles. That will completely change the outdated ergonomics of such a bike and still look good.
upgrading the brakes won't ruin the look either, and it's very easy to do. There's no reason to have shitty brakes.
And as for the ride being uncomfortable, fucking what? A nice steel frame will have a great ride, get some good tyres, it won't be pure torture at all.
I don't even object to ridiculous aggressive setup fashion bikes but this idea you can't possibly be genuinely comfortable on a classic road bike is ridiculous.
