The rims are single wall and it's probably got a freewheel.
It's pig heavy, dull and the drivetrain is probably worn out.
Looks very neglected. You'll have to fight it when servicing it. I've sunk too much time and money into one over the winter and deeply regretted it when I went for the first ride, because it was incredibly dull and heavy.

What would you guys say is a good, but cheap, mountain bike to buy? I want to get one so I can ride comfortably on my favorite trail that my current bike (a gravel bike) isnt good one. My old bike was a mountain bike, my new one is good for the road and flat trails or like a park, but anything with bumps or small obstacles its really bad for (which my favorite trail is full of).

Just something thats cheap but works, it doesnt have to be a great bike or anything. Decathlon has one for like 250 called the Rockrider. Anyone ever use that?

The big thing for me on my gravel is it has no suspension in the front or back and it has road handle bars which feel not good/hard to use on the trail(s). So riding it on any trail that isnt flat road or park paths is pretty shit. My PSI is whatever the tires themselves say on them, not at home so I cant get an exact number.

Functionally identical if you're new to cycling. Gravel bikes encompass a really broad range, and you didn't say what kind of riding you want to do. If you just want a "bike" like a normal ass bike the canyon will do, but it's a bit overpriced for what you're getting.

My bad. I ride mainly road and canal paths these days. About once a week I'll hit some gravel tracks and woodland trails - a few roots and some mud. Trails are quite flat. I've been doing this on an Old Proflex 856. As I mentioned, most of my riding is now roads and canal paths and I live in quite a hilly area of town, so the Proflex is quite cumbersome + it's not in the best condition and I need to fix it up.

In your situation I personally would recommend a gravel-type of bicycle. Now keep in mind: gravel bikes are kind of a marketing meme. If you think yourself a casual rider, maybe =< 100 miles/week, you probably don't need to spend +$1k on a brand name 2023 gravel bike. Probably it's overkill. That being said, memes though they are, a modern gravel-type bike would suit you well. If you're mostly on roads and flat easy trails a fat-tired road bike (i.e. a gravel bike) is the right tool for the job. While you also could do well buying used if you don't know what you're doing it would be harder to score a deal, people always overprice newer bikes. Maybe you'd be more comfortable with the warranty and maintenance a new bike offers.

I'd say you should go test ride some gravel bikes from local bike shops to decide your rough frame size, and if you like drop bars (it's free just tell them you're thinking about it). If you don't care for the more aggressive position, know that you could get a flat bar bike similar to your proflex, but it's a LOT faster and lighter, for a fair price.

In the end, a bike is a bike is a bike. For your type of riding a lot of different bikes will fill the role nicely. A full sus mtb like your proflex definitely is suboptimal since it's a boat anchor. But a hybrid bike, or a rigid mtb, or a gravel bike, those would probably make you happier. Just check you options, go for a test ride, and really decide how much money you want to spend. If you find some options we can help here, like I said

GT is one of the better old mtb brands

I think it's got Altus or Acera. It's not a high end model.
But it will have a cromo or partially cromo frame.

In my experience, how those tier of frames rides, is quite random, for road bikes also. Some are dull, some are quite fun. If your impression of a bike is bad it's also just as likely to be because you don't like the fit or you have shot bearings or shitty tires on it.
Personally I do think bikes of that tier are worth it, if nothing higher spec is available, and you like the paint. What's not worth it with them is pouring money in on fancy parts, 1x build, new groupset, insane, but time, and consumables, maybe some hacky conversion with parts bin stuff, yeah, worth it.

What I recommend with bikes like that, is try to get it riding. Work out if you like how it rides, and you like the fit, before you turn it into a project. If you don't like it, pass it on.

You're insane. It has a mint dork disc, non-ripped saddle, and no sign or dirt or wear anywhere. It has lived a life inside, and the boomer riser, still existant tanwall tire, and intact reflectors imply it's been barely ridden. It has a decent alloy seatpost, and quick release wheels, both signs of quality, also, decent metal cantilever brakes.

yeah no, new cables, new chain, cassette, bottom bracket, grips, brake pads, tires, you're easily spending $100-200 to properly overhaul a bike even if you don't modify it whatsoever.
If you're a noob then it's also buying things like ball bearings, grease, tools.

If you just want some shit old bike and continue neglect it you hardly need advice to do so

If you want a gravel bike just buy an entry level sora or claris road bike they fit wide tires these days. look for one you can easily setup with bars at saddle height, ie, a relaxed fit. That's your 'versatile' fast bike, not a grabelmeme. Only buy a gravel bike if you're serious about riding gravel or touring on it or you want to run full fenders for commuting.

If you didn't know, GT made plenty of BSOs.
Even if it is cromo, the frame and fork weigh close to 4kg. Acera or Altus rear mech don't mean it's a full Shimano groupset.
It has a shit loose ball bearing bottom bracket, shit front mech, shit cranks, shit pedals, shit hubs, shit rims, shit tires, shit handlebar, shit stem, shit brake pads, shit headset, etc.
They didn't grease any of the bearings at the factory, so everything will be fucked. My family had two similar low-end GTs from late 90s and I had the misfortune of falling for the "just get a 90s mtb" and fixing them up for me and my brother. They ride fine, but I should have just bought two new hybrids.
$150 for effectively an old shitty frame and a few usable parts is too much.
If it were $50 it would make for a decent beater.

Whats a good basic entry level mountain bike in the $300-500 range? Im not looking to tear up major trails. I havent ridden a bike in years and im out of shape(fat) but I want to dip my toes in the water to change that. Ive started doing small hikes recently.

Facebook marketplace or local craigslist. Biggest issue is sizing can be different on the 90' mtbs. I got a '93 specialized hard rock which is a fun ride (replaced the saddle, added sim works super yummy tires in 26 x 2.2").
Otherwise the spiritual successor would be a surly or Crust bike (the latter being peak hipster and inc $$$). You can usually find surly frames (or completes) on ebay/fb marketplace.

Flat bar gravel bikes is what you want, on the more adventure side. Maybe look at the State 4130 All-Road Flat Bar. Salsa makes one too I know. The wildcard option is the Priority 600 if you're trying to do bikepacking/touring. Ryan van Duzer rides one.

Mechanical or Di2? Maybe I'll wait for the new GRX kit, but by then summer will be over. The frame would be a Aliexpress BXT carbon, I've had a good experience already with this brand.

For gravel, think all terrain bikes of the 90's meets more road-related geometry with some credence given to aerodynamics/road components.

A hardtail is still going to be on the mountain-bike side of geometry which may not be the most comfortable on longer rides.

I have no suspension, but use a Redshift stem and suspension seatpost. For the offroad riding I do, suspension forks/frame would be almost useless. This is very comfortable.

you mean around the weld point? Could possibly be a manufacturing defect. Yes, Ti is incredibly strong but it's also one of the most difficult materials to weld requiring an oxygen free chamber or else the Ti would immediately grab free O2 and form titanium dioxide instead of metallic titanium. Which brand manufactured your Ti bike? If it's any reputable Ti brand, they'll work with finding you a replacement. If it's some Chinesium Ti, you're shit out of luck, without proper QC on Ti frames, don't buy Chinesium Ti.

Last but not least, stronger does not directly translate to more durable. Durability is a quality on its own. If this was a race oriented bike with a focus on reducing as much material as safely possible, then stronger means stiffer, stiffer means more brittle, which leads to a higher likelihood of cracks.

Bought this bike from a guy who used it for some bikepacking and dropped the price a lot due to the marks from the framebags, I couldn't be happier. This is what I wanted from my older road bike (and the size is better suited for me) went from a size 52 race geometry rim brake 23mm tyres to this, 56 disk brakes, grx set, aluminium with carbon fork. I even got a higher average on some known stretches even though it has 38mm gravel tyres. The peace of mind of riding up and down curbs and abhorrent asphalt already pays for the bike.
In short, I'd suggest anyone curious about grebbel to give it a try. The added comfort is enough of a reason if you're no pro. I do miss the aesthetic of the simpler bike, this is basically a tank in comparison, but the stats seem to show I'm better off now.

I am stuck between the FX 2 and the Roadlite 4. I am leaning towards the FX 2 if simply because it's 100€ less in total cost in the end and I lack the experience if it makes up for that in quality. Cop or not? I'm on the need of replacing my fixed gear road bike conversion and this frame caught my eye. Primary use is for commuting (fork is drilled) and also some road use (I already really like fixed for the road), it will never see the track again. What I'm not sure about is the sloping top tube. I love how it looks but I'm unsure how it feels, specially for street use.

If the frame is your size and you get short cranks (165mm at most) you should be fine.
If I were to buy a fg frame I'd buy a Tsunami for the threadless headset and the multitude of frame sizes

Those hydraulic brakes will most likely be on their last legs, if you order it, replace them with v-brakes (Shimano or Tektro). Hydro rim brakes are a huge pain in the ass and offer no benefits.
Do a full check-up before riding it, many problems can be avoided if you notice them before they get very bad. Nothing should be seized or lose. Check all the bolts and nuts, even on the crankset.
The spec looks excellent, though I suspect these tires are past their expiration and weren't very good to begin with.
Like on most neglected used bikes, the hub cones will be either over tightened or totally loose, the cables and housings will be cheap and sticking. Headset bearings will be dry (or even rusted), grips will be sticky and slipping on the handlebar. The spokes will be loose if it hasn't been serviced before.
With any used bike, expect to spend half of its price on new consumable parts. All manufacturers cut corners on them and expect the consumer to replace them, which never seems to happen to these used bikes.
If you need work done at a bike shop, bring them the part that needs work done to it. Shops charge for every operation they need to do.
For example, if you need them to true the wheels, remove the tires and bring them only the wheels.
Often times, when you get a "full service", they do it half-assed and do stupid shit instead of doing things that matter.
I take my wheels to a service that only does wheels, my frames to a guy that specializes on frame repair and suspension to another guy. (My family has gotten quite unhealthy, so I've decided to get them into cycling. It seems to be working, though I'm the only one with enough mechanical knowledge and will to take care of all the bikes. It's a little hard having to routinely check up 6 bikes and fix them whenever something happens.)

I'm 1.8m tall, in size 52 I was in the end of the range, in size 56 I'm at the very beginning. My seat post is way less exposed, but I prefer a less twitchy bike overall.
Funny thing is, the smaller bike with skinny slicks wasn't way lighter as you'd think, even considering it had rim brakes. Both alu.

I'm looking for a bike replacement for my old piece of shit since I started riding more again
I'm a really big guy (2m) so local second hand market is a pain, especially since it's pretty unorganized with a lot of people just listing "bike"

I'm mainly looking at the Trek Marlin 6 (~675€), I went to go try the Trek Marlin 5 (~625€) at a local store recently and it felt real nice but I kinda want to go for 1x drivetrain so I'm considering the step up. However I'm also considering the Rockrider Explore 500 (560€) because it's also a 1x drivetrain and pretty mass market so it might be more bang for your buck despite being considered a "lower tier" brand than Trek.

Any input or other bikes in this price range I should consider?

What I have read comparing the marlin6 to the explore 500.
The trek has shimano deore drivetrain, which is well respected and a workhorse of the bike industry.
explore 500 has... microshift advent 9, which is unknown.
Trek has 10 speeds vs explore has 9.
On a 1x system each speed matters a fair amount since the trek has a 11-46 rear and the explore has an 11-42
So you get an easier gear while climbing, which at 2M tall you might need.

Everything else is a wash. Trek is using their in-house brand bontrager. While rockrider is out-sourcing.
Trek probably has better OEM tires. Bontrager tires are decent and popular enough.

I just came back from my local bike store after placing an order for pic related (Trek Dual Sport 3 Gen 5). I was in a similar situation to you for the past few weeks but after speaking with the some retards from my local Trek store and the more sensible people at my local store, I settled on this bike instead.

I've never had a proper bike before so I was thinking of getting a Marlin 5 gen 2. I definitely didn't want a road bike since I wanted to do some offroad stuff but nothing extreme, but I've never actually done real mountain biking before. When asking the guy sales rep at Trek if the Marlin 5 was a good "starting point", he instantly tried to upsell me to a Roscoe 6, which was nearly twice as much.

When I called my local store after leaving Trek, the guy I spoke to was brutally honest with me and said that he loves his Marlin 7 (2022), but solely as a casual MTB. He said to look into the Dual Sport line before our consultation. When I got there today, we spent probably 45 minutes purely talking about bike routes in Toronto and what I would actually be using the bike for, to which he said that he wouldn't even recommend the Marlin 5 - 7 if you're doing any road biking for more than 45 minutes.

If you're going to be riding on serious terrain for most of your time then the marlin is pretty good, hell I'd even say just go for the Marlin 5 and upgrade over time.

I'm surprised, I saw a lot of people talking about the marlin 5-7 as being a lot more suited to commuter/road riding compared to other mtbs

Like I said, I'm mainly interested in 6 over 5 due to the 1x drivetrain, front shifter shat the bed on me multiple times on different bikes so I kinda gave up on it and want to be able to have more than like 4 gears for once

What the fuck is with Trek's naming though

Gen4 suspension was pretty shit anyways, like worse than the Marlin 5 suspension. I compared the two in-store and it doesn't have much give - meaning it would be a something to replace sooner rather than later.

It's literally my first day on /n/ so I've been trying to get a lay of what and where people talk about certain things. Usage wise, we're pretty similar in terms of what we'd be riding on. I've also seen people buy a separate set of gravel tires and put them on a Marlin, but again if you're gonna put all this money into a bike it probably wiser to just pay more upfront and get what you want.

kek. I honestly wanted the Dual Sport 2 Gen 5 since its a nice grey colour (pic related) but it lacks a 1x drivetrain and the front fork is alloy instead of carbon fiber. I'm probably just gonna buy hockey grip tape and make the bike look like a mummy. I don't trust myself to do a good enough job and repaint it, nor do I wanna spend equally as much as the bike on a paintjob.

I don't have any experience with buying or selling second hand, but as long as it rides safely, I don't think it's worth changing parts to resell it unless you have them spare.
If you spend say 30 bucks on new tires & add 30 bucks to the price you're asking, it'll just make it less likely for me to be interested. Maybe I have tires in mind I want to replace them with anyway, maybe I'll just ride the ones you have into the ground first

Should've mentioned that they pay around half and you have to lease it for 36 months and then you get to buy it off them for a fifth or so. Overall it comes out at being 33% cheaper for a 850 EUR bike if you also get it insured.

After researching a bit it seems that bikes around that price range are all very similar in that all the OEMs offer their own saddles, handlebars, pedals and the frame and source all the rest from Shimano

Truly debatable. Many go DTC(direct to customer) so you buy online and get it shipped instead of going to a bike shop.
I would go to a bike shop, check out some bikes/find ones you like, then compare groupo/frame geo/weight/etc to others.

Midrange is generally a good sweatpoint for reliability/cost/performance.
So for shimano mountain bikes slx or deore are decent and pretty cheap. Anything better is nice.

Most of the frames, wheels, etc are pretty comparable until you ride enough and learn what matters to you vs what doesn't.

The only bikes I have ridden that truly sucked had 0 maintenance done to them.

Miscellaneous:
- I have never had a "real" bike (my current one was ~150€ 10+ years ago). I don't know what I want (I've yet to understand the difference between a gravel bike, a hybrid bike, an endurance bike, and a hardtail).
- I am an average/inexperienced rider.
- I have just gotten back to riding in the past few weeks. I am doing it regularly and would like to purchase a bike that'll last me for at least a couple of years.
- It would be ideal if the frame allowed me to mount a basket and/or one of those steel grate-looking things on the back to carry stuff.
- Space is a concern. Currently I have to remove my bike's front wheel whenever I want to transport it in my car. Storing my current bike inside the house is annoying but doable, despite it looking smaller than "real" bikes.
- I am not too fussed about having to make adjusments/modding my bike as long as it's quick (e.g., I'd be open to buying a gravel bike and seapping between 2 sets of wheels for different types of pavement).

Suggestions and thoughts?

Gravel bikes are a newer thing that took over the place of cyclocross bikes. They are essentially road bikes with slightly different geometry, wider tires, and probably more durable design focus. Could do everything you want. fastest for your compacted sand, fast on road, should have bikepacking/luggage optinos.
Hybrid bikes are a do all/suv of bikes. Honestly they just look like older ridgid mountain bikes with a flat bar. Luggage could be easier to setup on the flat bar, I am not sure. Very similar to the gravel bike but a different seating position, handlebars, etc.
Endurance bike looks to just be a road bike. Not as good for soft sand but can do okay, fastest, lightest probably, and better for focusing on going fast.
Similar to a gravel bike but less offroad focused.
Hardtails are essentially just mountain bikes with a suspension fork, or a hybrid with a suspension fork for the prices you are looking at.
Better offroad due to the fork, probably heavier, also good for bumpy shitty terrain.

If you can, go to a bike store and see the types of bikes and just talk to the guys. If you see a style or design you like ask about it.
The reality is the type of riding you do all bikes will probably do it.
I suspect a hybrid bike would be optimal, but a gravel is just as good since you plan on doing road and sandy trails, no roots, huge rocks, etc.

Nah you can usually find nice old converted road bikes and purpose built 4130 or better fixed gear bikes for like half that price, $150-200 or so. I'm about to drop $175 on a 10 year old fixed gear bike this Saturday, for example. That guy is charging a ton because he claims the bike to be in mint condition, but it's still a lugless frame conversion and with a bunch of random parts. I damn well know that bike came with drop bars and pedals worth more than $5, where are they now? If I were you I'd keep on looking and find something with a little more bang for your buck.

It's hard to say.

Old peugeots more often than not are low-end bikes with nice paint. I would be optimistic about that one because it has a nice fluted seatpost and a forged derailer hanger. But really, might still be gaspipe, but it's more about how you like the looks and it might still ride quite well.

The wheels are likely cheap spec due to the schrader valves and the tires also. So their value is about condition, and it ranges from zero to $100 for the wheels+ tires. He might think they're worth something but they're not. Closely scrutinize for sidewall cracks, and take the wheels off to feel the bearings by turning the axles in your fingers. Also check each spoke for even tension and spin it for trueness. If the wheels/tires are mint the price might be fair but if they are not then it is delusional. Aesthetically it's nice that they have silver spokes but not nice that they have black hubs.

None of the other parts are worth much. The brake calipers, pedals, and handlebar are particuraly crappy. The inner chainring has not even been removed, ie, it's a lazy conversion.

Really, $100 would be a good deal, $200 would be a fair deal, and $300 might make sense if the condition is fantastic, it rides well, and you like it, otherwise, it's ridiculous. The desirability for a single speed (not fixed) road bike is very low. You say you're sick of gears but actually you're sick of malfunctioning gears. Restoring a similiar, better, 80s/90s 2x7 road bike, with downtube shifters, so that the shifting is flawless, will net a superior machine and is within your price range if you're in a good market.

Don't expect used higher end hardware to cost less than the cheapest new junk, compare apples to apples.
When the market was especially awful, I put together a commuter bike from an ancient soviet road frame and aliexpress parts, including a 1x9 Ltwoo derailleur and shifter.
Haven't had to fix anything after I put it together, third season going strong.
All in, less than $400.
Study the market and don't buy junk

yeah old suntour stuff is nice but it's severely handicapped by compatibility and availability.

You can get a new wider cassette for tricolor off the shelf and pretty much any wheel will work with it and so will most derailers.

Suntour it's a specific threaded freewheel and different indexing. Going to wider gearing is difficult (that and a brake upgrade are the liveability upgrades those nice old roadies need to be practical) and replacing parts means hunting for vintage stuff.

It's an excellent bike though, high end tubeset. And the clear dork disc is a great sign. The thing is those dave scots are quite ubiquitous, the paint is ugly, and the unicrown fork is ugly. That relegates them as 'nice beater' not 'gorgeous classic' although they do have their adherants.

I would try for a 26 hardtail with non-ancient suspension and normal amounts of gears.

Just look for a somewhat mainstream brand, with components like shimano+fox, or sram/rockshox
marzocchi makes good forks too.
I would look for 3x9 or 2x9 speed bikes. Those are what I rode on and are good quality but cheap now due to age.

Internal gear hub just adds weight.
And it becomes next to impossible to modify your gearing, so you better actually like the spread. Which I usually do not.

dynamo hub is a good meme- kinda. You only lose like 5-10 watts to it and the weight doesn't necessarily matter. Always having lights is incredibly based and you can supplement them with battery lights for flashers or even more spread.
belt drive, internal gear hub, and integrated racks are bad memes
Belt drive sells itself as low maintenance. I've encountered both irl and online so many people bitching about finding tensioning them impossible or how it walks off or some other small issue that drives them insane. It's like how titanium is supposed to last forever but loads of them crack welds and you're just as likely to crash it and fuck it like any other frame.

The rack integrated into the mudguard is awful and hideous. Just spend the money on nice german Tubus racks to suit. SO much better.

I would recommend the sportier hybrid models.
Pic rel has a great groupset, ok tektro hydraulic brakes, a carbon fork, slow but fun tires.

strongly consider just getting a drop bar road bike.

Also consider getting the step-through 'womans' version of these bikes, if you can find one that fits you. You are quite tall so it's unlikely. But if you do then you can run a large rear basket and get on and off through the middle which is pretty useful.

That's like saying scratches on a car's exterior are a sign that it's a salvage title.

It's physically impossible to use a bike and not have it get some scars, saying more than that is useless without seeing the nature of the paint damage. There's also damage that can occur without any visible signs. That's the whole reason some people won't buy used carbon. You can't tell. The scratches could be from leaning it up against a rock for 10 seconds. Or they could be from a violent crash.

If the carbon itself is visibly dented then that's a whole other story but just paint damage? That means very little. Being struck by a hard and smooth object could just as easily cause fatal structural damage without much visible scratching if at all.

Looking for a road bike, for just about 1200€. A new fork is prohibitively expensive unless it's a really nice frame.
It's almost never worth buying a bike that needs a new fork unless you have a decent used one to replace it with, which itself usually has to be stolen from another nice frame which you could just use instead, or is taken from a crash damaged frame and is sketchy.
So by that logic, no, you shouldn't replace the fork. Either that or you shouldn't have bought the bike.
I think slightly sketchy old carbon is ok though.
10 years isn't that old.
As mentioned superficial damage is almost inevitable and not important.

I suggest you fully remove the fork to service the headset though, and closely inspect the steerer tube and the fork crown. Don't just gauge the condition of the blades and fork ends.

Other warning signs would be scuffed hoods, bent bars, or a mismatched front wheel. These things all imply a crash. I don't know if i would like to ride a -crashed- carbon fork.

If you do get a new one then chink carbon is its own beast and i would look at a reynolds, ritchey, or columbus fork. These are probably going to cost more than you paid for the entire bike.

the larger problem is most of them, especially the older ones, have bullshit french standards. If it has a simplex derailer it often has a simplex derailer hanger, meaning you cannot install any other type of derailer without re-tapping it and filing a stop. This is quite intensive work. The simplex and other french parts are usually shit. They pioneered the early 'high tech' use of delrin plastiques which are all snapped or on the verge of snapping so it's not just a compatibility headache if you wanted to customize it but it's likely broken and you can't fix it. Many have french or swiss bottom brackets. The helicomatic rear hubs are absolute garbage and next to impossible to service.

-however- Peugeot also made many pro and club level bikes, and their name also adorns many later models which adopt modern standards and do not have the compatibility bullshit.
It can also be worth buying a peugeot shitter purely if you like the paint enough. Many shit old bikes are still quite fun.

It's really the same as with any bike that a -high end- one is worth buying, and you can tell by the type of steel tubing used, pic rel for example has a reynolds 531 sticker and is obviously a nice bike, and by the level of componentry that is specced.

Good. I have been on a researching vintage bike spree and vintage peugeot's tend to have heavier gauge steel, but everyone says they ride great.

Do research on (bike-forum) for the model you see used to judge quality.
Generally nice old bikes have chrome chain stays, maybe a chrome fork, and campagnolo components.
However since it's french simplex would be common. Suntour made really nice stuff back then so don't be afraid of that either.
Peugeot have some cool designs on their bikes.
I have been liking motobecane, another french old brand.

No. Campagnolo dominated the -vintage- market, that's pre-80s. The vast majority of practical classic bikes are from the mid 80s- mid 90s after japanese stuff took over.

Even classic italian bikes are almost always specced with shimano.

Campagnolo is for sure an instant sign of quality but its not common. It's also almost worth avoiding unless you know what you're doing.

Even classic European bikes from the mid 80s onwards, for example, pic rel, are mostly specced with shimano because by then it was better for the money and you're still at a time when people, framebuilders, and shops, would chose what equipment to use. Campagnolo never really did what shimano does now and force their equipment, although they could have leveraged market/race dominance from earlier eras to do so.

I certainly see the appeal of that however I think the peak era of classic bikes is when they had indexed downtube shifters.
There are really functionally two campagnolo eras to consider on vintage bikes, one is the vintage vintage freewheels friction shifting and absolute garbage brakes era, eroica REALLY old bikes, and these are extremely rare and difficult and make almost no sense for a beginner. Then there are the late-steel early brifter era ergopower 8 speed campagnolo Indurain Pantani type bikes and these are also rare and expensive and old ergopower shifters are almost all shot and expensive/difficult to repair or replace especially the lower tier campagnolo stuff like veloce and mirage which is really not good or special enough to bother with. Like those bottom brackets are almost $100 each and the cassettes are fast becoming unobtanium.

Indexed shimano downtube shifters and 7 speed cassette systems on the other hand are extremely practical. Downtube shifters alone aren't 'wierd' enough to ride? Is there actually any charm to shit brakes?

you're gonna see far more of the shitty entry level campagnolo of that ~late 80s/90s era but i don't think that campagnolo is really special at all, you just might get some nice wheels on a bike with it.

As for vintage campagnolo like pic rel, gorgeous, yes, but also ridiculous and absolutely shitter than basic japanese equipment that's newer.

Once you start looking into the nitty gritty details the pine mountain is more of a trail bike, and the team 2 is the xc/trail bike.
So it's based on your goals. For racing or out and out speed the team marin is better.
For bikepacking(literally says that) or more importantly faster descents the pine mountain is better.
It has a slightly longer wheelbase, and more relaxed head angle+thicker stanchions on the fork, which generally means it's heavier duty.
The tires also show the pine being more heavier duty, although all of these are only slightly.

So it's your call, both will do very similarly on the same trails.

For hollowtech II shimano, the 73mm cups are each 2.5mm narrower than the 68mm cups.

So a 68mm road frame with an ultegra bottom bracket is essentially the same as a 73mm mtb frame with a deore bottom bracket and both of them will take the same hollowtech II cranks, road, or mtb.

There's no compatibility issue for you there.

The 73mm mtb bbs are even sold as 68/73 with included 2.5mm spacers, so that you can use them in road frames.
As a side note, that ability to space mtb bbs in road frames can be very useful, especially with square taper, for installing cranks designed for asymmetrical bottom brackets (which are no longer readily available).

I have measured this as well and found that one shimano bottom bracket I had (of many) did not conform to this, so as another aside i'll say that this is theoretically how it works, but trial and error, measurement, basic understanding of how the systems can and should work and common sense need still be applied to bottom bracket installs.

Kona Sutra too is a heavy duty touring bike. I'd say it fits a similiar niche as the long haul trucker, I wouldn't advise someone get one unless serious touring is really the primary purpose, otherwise it's just an overly stiff, heavy, sluggish overbuilt bike, Consider you can still tour on something sportier.

I wouldn't worry about the rust issue. I also wouldn't necessarily worry about getting steel. Consider generic endurance road bikes with wider tire clearance. Those are the best bang for buck allrounders.
I don't know exactly what you're gonna be doing but you can chuck 35mm G-Ones on most entry level disc road bikes now, the gearing has a 1:1 low which can be upgraded with a subcompact, and then you lean into bikepacking bags. For an unloaded bike your ride ends up lighter and cheaper

Yes absolutely.
Consider you will probably spend €100-200 to overhaul a used bike, with quality consumables. You want to pay the money for high-spec tires, new cables, new chain, new bartape etc. And service all the bearings. If it is an older bike you may well want to convert it to have wider gearing and better brakes.
Try get something for 200-300
That is the usual value of a decent high-ish end project, modern, or classic. You may well get a deal for less.

Do you want an 80s/90s classic like pic rel, or something more modern with shifters integrated into the brake levers? Both are good options. The old bike is a little more durable, charming and has cheaper parts, while the modern bike is lighter and has shifters on the bars.

Post any bikes you find for hot takes.

I prefer steel because aluminium and carbon are more fragile and less long lasting in my opinion. I guess the Panorama looks good enough, just that I wanted a little more tire clearance because I have wider tires and I tend to ride more gnarly trails. And I don't trust carbon forks for longer bikepacking trips

Your steel is real meme is absolutely valid but that is if you're gonna do loaded touring. Otherwise you're just being stupid.
Who fucking cares how long her bike lasts? I would be more worried about her not riding it. If she doesn't ride it because it's too heavy and slow then the Kona Sutra could last for ever!

Doing a custom frame up build for her, as a surprise, with a full retail new frame, is also a absolute fucking minefield. It's not something that even makes sense usually for you to do for yourself.

Is she a roadie? Has she done 100km on her road bike? If she's not a roadie then an XC mtb might make more sense. If she is a roadie then as she has said, a sporty gravel bike, which as i've said is also just any disc road bike which fits 35s which is practically all of them.

As for her current road bike 'riding like shit' well it shouldn't. You should overhaul it before you do a custom frame up build. If that just means neither of you like narrow tire road bikes then fair. But a bearing refresh, recable, and a tire upgrade and a basic bike fit might change everything on that one too. If that's daunting to you absolutely do not try to build her a custom bike.

Oh I didn't know weight mattered so much like I told you I don't know that much about bikes. I don't think we'll ever reach the multi week long bikepacking but I feel it's more reassuring to ride a bike with a steel fork knowing it'ss more durable and dependable. That is your modern equivelant of a sporty touring bike.
It's cheaper and better than a cromo tourer for most casual riding. Or of an actual gravel bike.

The downside is you can't run a full rack setup but if you're not doing long tours would you even ever want to? The options for bar bags & frame bags these days are really extensive. You might even have someone locally to you who can custom make them for less than the price of nice racks & panniers. And you can run a rear rack on most of them.

I have a Surly Steamroller single speed bicycle. I've been debating the idea of putting a 3 speed internal gear hub, either a Shimano or a Sturmey Archer. Is this even doable? I've heard that the diameter of the dropouts is different on single speed bicycles versus other bikes and an IGH might not work.

Hybrids can be kinda meh but if it's your first bike it's probably the right thing.

I'm not sure if you're getting the right model of it.
You pay an extra $90 to get fenders, a kickstand and a rack. This is a good deal if you want fenders and a kickstand, but if this bike is gonna be mostly for leisure you probably don't. You probably just want a rack. You can get a better rack aftermarket for $90. Fenders and a kickstand can just be extra weight and hassle. Kickstands periodically loosen themselves, and can rattle, and fenders can rub and bend out of shape when the bike gets knocked around. They are fantastic for wet weather commuting but iunno if you're gonna routinely do that.

I would also strongly consider the escape disc 1. It has a carbon fork, not aluminium. This will make it ride quite a lot smoother. If you can, test ride both, and see if you can find a difference. Imo it is worth the extra money. The drivetrain spec is also better, although, not in any particularly important way.

You're right to bump your budget above the cheaper 7 speed tourney models with freewheels. These colours on the giants are also quite nice.

Dual sports tend to have suspension that adds weight, but can't handle anything worthwhile. Might make for a heavy, plush commuter or OK for LIGHT trails.

You can replace/fix the shifter easily/cheaply

ok so they have little ratchets inside them and spring'd pawls click over them. The springy pawl things are greased so that grease goes bad and they sieze.

In my experience, this works about half the time. It's always worth a shot. And it's a much better shot with shifters that -kinda- work.

You have to flush the shit out of them. That means emptying like half a can of wd40 into the openings and working the action a bunch. Do it on a few different occasions. Remove the hoods first. It's good to do that and clean the hoods with soapy water anyway but if you spray the fuck out of them with solvent/oil over days they will be fucked.

Then you grease them again.

While it is possible to disassemble shimano shifters i have never managed to succesfully re-assemble them and i have tried several times so i do not recommedn that.

that is a pretty cool bike. I really like orange bikes. the 'bugatti' branding is quite sad/pathetic but meh. It could use a lot of work and needs some serious upgrades to actually be fast.

Tryning to get a hardtail mtb for light to intermittent trails, and some road. Currently on a 2006 diamondback hardtail. What would be the best spec'd mtb for under $600? yeah that looks excellent. just make sure it fits you. you definately want a larger size fit on a tourer like that, so the drops are useable offroad on trails, and you can grind out long miles reasonably comfy.
