You should be able to walk out of your house or apartment and easily get to your school, a café, the dentist, the pet store, a transit station, grocery store, a bar or visit your friends etc.
Suburbs may have sidewalks or even some trails, but the distance between things is so vast that that is what makes them unwalkable. Compare living in say Berlin or Boston where you can easily walk to whatever you need around you. Now compare that to a suburb where it's a 30 minute walk to the closest grocery store or a 45 minute walk to the doctor.
