I do not think that that would disturb the airflow too much, as it is mostly in area of stagnation point. It's not as good as completely closed shape, but good compromise if air is needed. Putting it anywhere else would be much more disruptive to air flow. As far as I understand.
Front opening could also serve as an entrance if it could open wide enough. Entering/exiting would be a bit uncomfortable, but in that case there would be no need of any other door, which would greatly weaken the structure (Or would be heavier, because of reinforcement around the doors.).
