Has anyone ever used one of these? They seems like the perfect balance between car and bike. They're compact, aerodynamic, have cover from the elements, and now there are some with electric assistance making it feasible to go +30mph. What's keeping them so niche? Are there any downsides because the hefty price tags?

There are a few model types with varying volumes for storage, but admittedly, most of them are designed for a very specific kind of enthusiast instead of practical usage. Some e-bikes are starting to add covers for transit, but it's not exactly the same thing.

they are amazing on flats, someone who's decently fit can average 40-50kmph
uphill they're pretty shitty, heavy weight + you can't get out of saddle like you do on a diamond frame (e-assist can help with that)

they're expensive as shit, you need a garage, not quick enough on main roads, too slow on bike paths, huge turning circle

still my idea of a perfect world is everyone in one of these fuckers zooming past each other

It really depends on the model, like some even have mirrors.

The rest is more significant and requires some infrastructure changes. Curbs could actually be done away with or lowered because even bikes can have trouble hopping them. I just busted my tire doing that. Being a dork can't be helped, though.

Go on any velomobile forum and you'll read countless threads about tyres, and the need for a much tougher tyre on the hard shoulder side as it constantly picks up glass, metal shards and wire, since you shouldn't really ride these right down the centre of a road (unless you have rather large testicles). I really wouldn't want to try to control a tiller steered cumb with a blown front wheel downhill

I've also read a fair few threads about riders wiping out on normal roads because they coasted onto the rumble strips at speed and lost control and flew into a ditch

They're also prone to dying, since they have all the same mechanical vulnerability as a bike (admittedly with less exposure to elements and less impacts) but with often experimental frames and slightly bodged steering systems, really long drive and brake systems and a whole host of niche parts (chains have to be DIY'd out of many bike chains for instance), and you're not gonna find parts for a 3 wheel hub or 72 tooth chainring in some small town.

They are incredible feats of human powered travel and aesthetic as fuck, but a two wheeled recumbent with an aero luggage box and well designed fairing gets you pretty close for much less weight and downsides

It just needs to be standardized to be a hyper lite shell you can put on universally around a traditional bike. Which has its own problems as an inverted pendulum, but absolutely NO ONE, will take velos seriously until they pull the ride height into parity with other vehicles. That is the whole thing right there. You can go 20mph if you look like you are and equal Kodiak on its hind legs. You can't if you look like a mouse under their feet.

Not for over $10000
On the small end you could get an incredibly good e scoot or ebike with 50-100 miles range while still maintaining small size, maneuverability and visibility for the rider.
On the large end you could just buy an actual motorcycle or scooter that can keep up with traffic or just get a used car. There is no reason for these to exist and that's reflected by the fact that you don't see any of these on the road

Ideally there would be some sort of regenerative braking system, that you would charge going downhill, and use for uphill. I would avoid electric system, because you get in electric assisted bike territory and (future) regulations and I don't think they would care to distinguish electric assisted bike vs. electric brake recovery bike.
One way would be pneumatic. Although there is nothing on the market as whole system. You would have to use 300bar scuba tanks and pump and I don't know what efficiency you would get out of the system against the additional weight.
6 liter at 300bar could move straight up 120kg object between 300- 900 meters, depending on expansion type, according to my quick calculations. Not factoring in any inefficiencies.

I want a velo so bad, since I'm short I was looking at the Snoek, but that shit starts at 10k€ and i would want the racing hood, so thats another 1k. But since I'm saving up for a house i just cant afford it.

I also have designed a 4 wheel velo that can tilt and has suspension, it will probably be heavy, but we'll see. It will have external wheels with an aero cover, I also want it to have a decent turning radius so it will probably will be slightly wider than the quattrovelo. Someday i will build it.

Would love to have one but even with the bicylce friendly infrastructure we got here in Dutchland I just don't think they are very practical machines. And yes, for the price of one of these things new, I can get a car and a (e)scooter to cover most of my transport needs. Velo in pic is sexy AF tho

The best velomobile I've seen is the Rotovelo. It's the only one aside from alleweder that actually has a duruable rotomolded shell.
It's also super simple with regular bike components like a velo should be without all the exotic propietary suspension parts etcetera. Plus it's the cheapest and has the best turning radius.

The downside is that it is not as light or fast as the European velomobiles but it's the only design that is fit for mass adoption

I don't know what you are talking about.
The idea is that the front would be made of flexible material (silicone or tpu,...) and would allow to adjust the size of front intake. That way the driver always gets the right amount of cooling/fresh air.

Pay attention at what you are doing with tilting. Tilting is only useful if you significantly transfer center of gravity/center of forces towards the inner side of the corner, relative to wheels-ground contact patches. This will prevent you from flipping over in a corner. If you just tilt it around a center of gravity you don't achieve anything, it is just another complication. Or if the movement is very small, maybe not worth it.

I am more a fan of 2 wheeled recumbents. You can add an aero trunk, front fender and throw on a bottom open body sock for full enclosure and it's pretty much a velomobile, with all the advantages of 2 wheels + compactness and lightweight. Bike can be ridden naked or faired depending on the wish, so there is greater versatility.

You can also design 2 wheeled velos with 2 small landing wheels that pop out at low speeds

Parks like a car.
Drives like a car with a 200w engine.
Can't hop over curbs, perfect pavement only.
Not cheap either.

They're very specialized tools for going fast under pedal power. If that's what you want to do because because they do that job. For practical urban mobility they're about as practical as a horse, but not as classy.

(My sister sometimes rides her horse through the drive-through, it's super fun!)

Honestly velos don't look that cool until you see one fly past ya. They took like little fighter planes without wheels

That said these vehicles rely heavily on good infrastructure. You often have to ride behind cars cause your so fast and that means riding in their exhaust trail

All that said these are external downsides and not inherent problems with the vehicle but in NY eye these vehicles are too good for this world

That said be a pioneer and get one, the velo community will be like a family to you. You will make new friends. If you are suffering from depression they are excellent hobby to have cause you will get a ton of attention and interest from others and get to talk to a lot of people girls included
