In fact the #844 is the only steam locomotive to have never been retired from a US Class I railroad. The Union Pacific also owns and runs #3985, a 4-6-6-4 Challenger. They are also in the process of restoring #4014, a 4-8-8-4 Big Boy. #3985 has been down for several years because #844 and #3984 came up for their 15 year inspection/rebuilds at the same time and UP chose to rebuild #844 first. Then the opportunity to acquire #4014 came up and the steam shop crew was put on that instead. #3984 will come back up when #4014 is finished. There's also
