It's considered one of the unofficial rules of professional racing that you don't take advantage of an opponent's mechanical to win a race/stage.
I mean, people still do it, but they usually catch a lot of shit for it.
I can see it being selfish, because was satisfying his own desire to beat Manami in a fair contest, when the best thing for the team would be to win the mountain checkpoint. But I don't really see it as disrespectful.
