The MD-11 and MD-90 were very well designed, but the problem was that they were designed for a marked that was no longer there. Should they have have had the foresight, McDonnell Douglas could have easily made a good twinjet.

id imagine it would have been a bigger pain in the ass to get the #2 hyd sys hooked up to the 2nd engine just due to the fact that a tail engine like the MD-11s was really awkward.

You wouldn't want two hyd sys on the same engine, that reduces redundancy. The MD-11 has two electric pumps for the #3 sys that can power the other two sys through reversible pumps that act as power transfer units.

they could have used weights or tweaked the airframe, me thinks. (although the MD-11 always struck me as if the #2 engine caused more CG issues rather than less)

the -200 ones were, i think. but 767s still do intercontinental now so id imagine theyd have more.
