In real life, all these gears just matter for that 10-20 % of cycling. The other 80% you are suficient with 1 gear, make it two gears and you will be happy 90% of the time. Is it really worth the extra hassle / 10 gears the increase those last marginal 10% gains? I don't think so. Of course the bicycle market has convinced people it is, because thats how they make more money.

1 gear - 80% sufficient (super simple)
2 gears - 90% sufficient (optimal compromise)

4 gears - 96% sufficient
