So I recently replaced my 24/34/42 crankset to a 28/38/48 crankset and have run into an issue with my 7 speed 14-34 freewheel. Sometimes when I'm in the highest gear (48x14) it slips out of engagement and starts spinning freely both ways. It immediately comes back into engagement if I go down to the center chainring (38). It never did this with the old crankset. Is this an issue with the new gearing or the freewheel itself? The freewheel is a Shimano Megarange (either TZ500 or MF-TZ21). Is there anything I can do besides replacing the freewheel itself? Were these freewheels just not designed for this kind of gearing? Recomend suitable replacement freewheels?

Bike maintenance tip I'd like to share:
I'd been looking for a good way to clean things like chainrings and the cassette modules that don't come apart completely (Shimano road, at least).
What I came up with was pipe cleaners. Not really reusable, but you don't clean things like chainrings and cassettes all that often, so not very expensive.
Pipe cleaner not wide enough to work? Twist 2 or 3 together, now they're wide enough.
Spray some solvent (or whatever you use to clean with) on the chainrings or cassette module, and on the pipe cleaners. Pull the pipe cleaners through the gap between the cogs or chainrings. Repeat until clean, replacing the pipe cleaners as required. Faster than having to pull your crankset off and dismantle it, and with cassettes that don't come apart anyway, it gets between the cogs to get everything very clean.

Ideally I'd prefer a reusable solution like a spiral brush with nylon bristles, but so far I haven't been able to find one that's the right diameter to work effectively, at least not from Grainger or McMaster-Carr.
The pipe cleaners are a good workable solution though.

Small blinkers you can take off and put them in the bag, also clip on reflectors (recommended by law types) that you can easily clip off and put in the bag. Also that reflective armband that wraps itself around things that you can also put in the bag.

Blinkers are illegal here and mounting them would probably get me stopped quicker than a lack of lights would, ironically. Hub dynamo and toggle lights wouldn't be a big issue, and apparently you can get clip-on spoke reflectors that should be removable in a matter of seconds, but I'm struggling with detachable front and rear reflectors, might have to hardmount them and figure out a solution for covering them. Might be able to just mount them on the seat tube and handle bar in a way that the seat bag and bar bag I'm planning to buy would cover them. Thanks for the inspiration.

Whether the enforcement rate is actually worth caring about beyond active solid lights in the correct color is written on a different sheet. Personally I've never been stopped for missing reflectors and don't know anyone who was, only for missing lights.

Poorfag here.
Right now commuting and touring on pretty shitty hybrid, but I what to get faster and start road cycling.
Thing is that I don't have a lot of money for new bike atm, so my options is:
1. Get old road bike with downtube shifting
2. Continue riding my hybrid and save up for used road bike.

Is it worth buying old road bike? Or I should save my money?

If your hybrid geo allows you can convert it to a semi road/tourer, thinner touring tires 32-35mm, bigger chainring set (typical big set for hybrids are 48/36/26T, 2x chainring set is better for drop bar conversion), 10-11 speed rear set with 11T bottom.
You can keep your flat bar levers if you go for a butterfly bar or you can swap the flat bar to a tapered drop bar and get a matching set of brake shifters.
And presto, you have a tourer/gravel bike, depending on your tire choice.

sounds like it would work great.
the park tool brush with the scraping hook for between gears works great and doesn't generate a bunch of disposable trash, though.
the bristles are the perfect length but more importantly they're really thick so they stay stiff and scrape the far ends of the gears rather than uselessly bend sideways. there are probably cheaper versions, not sure about quality.

I have something like that. The job it does doesn't meet my standards. If I'm cleaning chainrings and cogs I want the CLEAN, not 'sort of clean'.
As previously stated I've tried finding a spiral brush that's reusable but I've yet to find one that's the right diameter, they're all either too small or too big to work. What I'm doing with the pipe cleaners is the best tradeoff I can manage at this time. It's not like I do this every week or even every month, and the average de/n/izen probably doesn't clean those more than once or twice a year.
If you can find a sprial brush with nylon bristles that'll fit between 10- and 11-speed chainrings and cogs, post it, I'll buy a couple and try them.

Speaking of Park Tool, I'd also like to recommend this dummy hub for when you're cleaning your chains. It keeps all the grunge from your chain from getting all over your cassette.

it's not even an upgrade aside from braking performance, it's negligable in terms of performance, it's just wasting a lot of money to oftentimes ruin the charm of the bike.
I've done it several times too.

if you want smaller gearing on an old road bike the easiest and cheapest thing to do is to install a new crankset with smaller chainrings. IRD's silver defiant is good and keeps the classic looks. could run into a problem if you have a braze-on FD but there's adapters for that: https://wickwerks.com/products/fit-link-adapter/

moving to a modern groupset is a money sink (you'll need new wheels too, for instance) and introduces too many annoying problems with shit like rear spacing

It's annoying to have to cold set it. If you don't cold set, you might wind up with a bit of misalignment when you just yeet the wheel in there (which is a little less fun when you have Campy dropouts), which can cause other issues with the hub.

Depends on the use and geometry of the bike and your body. I would consider it fairly unusual for a 6' 0" person to be properly fitted to an XL. It could be especially crippling for a mountain bike - longer chainstays make certain moves much harder. Otoh there are disciplines where the longer wheelbase could be beneficial.

A bike that is a bit too large will be fine, it'll be heavier and not as agile, but more comfortable.

A smaller bike will be less comfy, but lighter and more nimble.

I'd be mostly concerned it fits your: standover height and the stack and reach are appropriate for you. For best results, can compare to a bike you have, or someone will let you measure, try. Keep in mind, you can and will change up your fit when adding and adjusting parts.

If you have Shimano that's joined with a pin you press in and break off, it's not practical or even recommended to break the chain and re-join it just to clean it, aside from having to have a supply of pins on hand.
If you have a chain with a master link, you need to have new master links to replace the one you're removing since they're not recommended to re-use.
Furthermore cleaning a chain that's not on the bike is more difficult than cleaning it on the bike, unless you have an actual solvent bath to do that in. Most people don't have any such thing in their garage, and many anons here don't even have a garage at all to start with.
Meanwhile chain cleaners intended for cleaning the chain on the bike are not bad at all. This one does a pretty good job, given the right solvent.
Of course I imagine someone like you uses some shitty water-based 'degreaser' that ruins your chain anyway, reducing it's useful lifespan to a fraction of what it could be, encouraging rust, and leaving behind a residue that just attracts more dirt, so given your apparent ignorance of the subject I'd say you have no room to be judging anyone.

No, it really doesn't.
I've tried many different iterations of 'brushes' like that and none of them really work well at.
Again: if I'm going to clean the drivetrain components, I want them CLEAN, not just 'sort-of clean'. I want them looking as clean as brand-new components, ideally, because otherwise your nice clean chain just get mucked up with the grime that migrates from your sort-of-clean chainrings and cogs.
Also dirty drivetrains don't shift as well as clean drivetrains.
If it's worth the time to do then it's worth the time to do properly.

Depends. I have both a thru axle and QR skewer bike and it's great for both. If you only have a TA type, it might not be worth it for you. Frankly, I consider chains consumables and, while I do clean and lube them, I don't go as far as to undo the quick link and the whole soak in solvent dance. Like another anon said, Shimano doesn't recommend re using their quick links, and their chain pins aren't exactly designed to reset all the time either. My other bike has some cheapo KMC chain, and I think they're OK with reusing, I'm just a lazy cunt. I just make sure I get a good scrubbing at multiple angles and articulations. Maybe annually do I do a full drivetrain disassemble, complete with cassette removal.

A clean cassette and clean chainrings take some weeks to accumulate the sort of muck I eventually scrape and clean off them, which by the way can accumulate to the point where it migrate to the chain, and where it'll affect shifting performance. All that crap can also cause the drivetrain to wear out faster.
If you don't give a shit or just can't see the point then that's up to you. But you're wasting your time trying to 'shame' me into not doing it the way I've been doing it for years and years.

Slime and tire liners suck - unless you're a child who doesn't have enough situational awareness to avoid riding through fields of thorny plants then they're not worth it since they make your wheels heavy and tires less effective as pneumatic suspension. If your riding means you really can't avoid fields full of thorny plants then the adult solution is to go tubeless, which allows you to get a lot of protection against small punctures without sacrificing your ride.

Stupid question: A week ago I went to get a shifter cable replaced at a bare-bones bike repair store. The mechanic noticed a soft rattle when the front wheel is dropped at around an inch or more, and he told me that the front hub is loose. It's unlikely the hub can just be tightened, it should be overhauled. It's not very hard, just takes a while, you need some cone spanners, a solvent, and some grease and maybe new ball bearings.

I've never used hydraulic brakes before (on a bicycle). Are they really that much better than mechanical disc brakes? My old set of Avid BB7s has never disappointed me on my mountain bike, no problem feathering the brakes but it's not difficult to lock up the wheels if I wanted to.

You need disc brakes on your road bike so that the fork is incredibly stiff and uncomfortable. It's painful but that's good. Hydraulic discs do perform better than anything else, which is nice for mountain biking especially on technical terrain and steep descents. However they do need to be bled periodically which is annoying. On a mountain bike that is used more casually, I would view them as a luxury, they are a step up from mechanical discs, but not necessary.

The best you can do with wheel bearings to detemine if something is wrong with them is to dismount the wheel and turn the axle with your hand feeling for any roughness or severe resistance to it moving, or for that matter too little resistance, if it spins too easily then the bearings may be worn. FWIW the bottles I'm using right now came from Camelbak, the Podium model. No complaints and they don't leak like some cheap bottles do.
The only problem with using metal bottles is if you drop them they'll get dented, and if they get run over or stepped on they'll get crushed and stay that way. Also, expensive compared to plastic bottles. Glass bottles will shatter if you drop them while riding.

Buy tubeless tires or buy Schwalbe Marathon Plus tubed tires, which they say are unpunctureable. You can then use thin tubes safely, given you have decent rim tape. In order to sprint better, you have to sprint more.

Warm up thoroughly. Then do a series of 10-15 second maximum efforts with several minutes between efforts.

From a rolling start, with your hands in the drops, explode up out of the saddle and hammer as hard as you can. Play around with which gearing you start in, but generally large chainring and a mid-sized cog like 14t or 15t.
Everyone is a little different, but a good starting point for cadence is 120rpm.

I don't think so because a wheel built for gears is "dished" to make room for the cluster, so that should mean the hub is skinnier, too. if so, the width of the single-speed hub with the six-speed cluster hanging off of it would be too wide to fit on the bike.
but if you thread it on and it still goes between your dropouts, then I'm wrong and maybe it might work. you can't reuse a single speed chain though, you need a 6/7/8 one.
I also don't know if there are different standards for the threaded part of the hub. I would assume they're the same but maybe not.
even if it threaded on, it's gonna be wider than the single cog, so the axle probably won't reach through.

Frankly I'm unfairly biased against Slime in part because I've worked in a couple of shops where we sold slime in big dispenser buckets that are the most annoying tool in the entire shop because they invariably get clogged up and make messes... but more seriously, slime just doesn't seem to work very well unless it's dealing with very small punctures and if you get a puncture that slime comes out of then the tube is basically unpatchable at that point because the slime oozes out right in the place where you'd like a patch to stick. Sometimes it totally ruins valves too, which means yet another tube totally trashed. Slime is just a mediocre thing, it's not worth spending money on and adding weight to your wheels for such a small potential benefit unless it's something like a kids bike where weight and ride quality don't matter at all and you can't expect the rider to try and avoid punctures or to repair them when they do happen.

Hydraulic brakes and disc braking make a huge amount of difference for mountain biking because of the amount and frequency of braking required. I used Slime tubes for about a year or so as an experiment, after having to drop out of a road race due to flatting out.
Out of all the punctures I got with Slime tubes during that time, there was only 1 or 2 times that it actually made any difference, and even then I had to limp home on partial pressure because it would start leaking again.
The sealant would clog up the valves. It would make it a pain in the ass to patch the tube later. They were heavy and more expensive.
In the end I got rid of all of them because it just wasn't practical. I can't recommend them or any other kind of sealant, unless you have tubular tires, in which case you don't really have a choice but to put sealant in them, because if you flat out completely with those, you're calling for a ride.

How tight should the cone-nut-thing be on these?(thing between spacer and dustcap) My front wheel free spins really smooth and I never needed any adjusting but my rear wheel I had to slightly loosen that cone thing otherwise I got way too much friction trying to freely spin the wheel. I assume it's safe to incrementally loosen until I get reasonable smooth free spinning.

I'll take a closer look tomorrow but I don't even know if the derailleur side has the same adjustable cone-nut.

Just get one with mineral oil. Only the DOT4 filled systems needs frequent bleeding because of the DOT4 glycol is hygroscopic and also breaks down the sealants over time.
I have a mineral oil system and no maintenance is required.

The rubber handle on my bike grip has been constantly sliding off over the last few weeks and I have to push it back on after a few minutes, is there a simple and convenient way I can fix this myself with stuff I may already have?
Was considering putting a bit of rubber patch sealant inbetween the metal handle and rubber sleeve, but I'm unsure if that's a good idea or not.

It's just rubber on metal, so anything that's sticky that you can get off later if you need to (with a knife if necessary) is fine.

My idea would be to take it off and wrap some kind of tape around the metal until it's thicker and the fit is tighter.

Take it of. clean it properly with degreaser/brake cleaner.
Install using pressurized air, dab of water if you don't have acesss to a compressor.

If that does not work get new grips that you can clamp, probably cheaper than a tube of high quality rubber sealant.

Is it a cassette or a freewheel? If it's the latter it's a pretty easy mystery to solve, your axle is bent. If it's a cassette the freehub body should be off kilter from the main hub body if the axle is bent, which you should be able to see.

the only PITA is the selection of wheels can be quite limited and most manufacturers don't want to come up with track wheels a with plain aluminium rim brake surface but you can find something decent if you look around (just gotta accept that you trade a bit of weight for stiffness and aero on a budget alloy wheelset) and in the worst case you can build your own wheel or go to a high end wheelbuilder

I pulled the cassette cleaned it, plus freehub body; now I'm waiting for it to dry. I put it on my truing stand earlier to see if the freehub might be bent like another anon said, but it looked ok. I have a suspicion since I'm using a 10 speed cassette on a 11 speed body that maybe the spacer got seated funny some how? I have no idea yet. It was just doing odd things shifting and generally in drive lately and I'm wondering if this is why.

They do work tremendously well. Try one and you'll see the difference.
However, the gain in stopping power compared to mech. disc brakes is not that much. Mechanical disc brakes work plenty well. The difference will be in the feel, which is incomparable.

BUT

hydraulic brakes servicing is a lot more involved and finicky than a simple cable change. They can stop working suddenly and completely, whereas cable-action systems wear out over time and crap out little by little.
So be prepared to learn how to bleed and maintain your brakes or to have it done by a pro every now and then.

Overall: mech. disc brakes are good. Hydrau feels a lot better, but is a hassle to care for.

I've never understood this fear of sweating some people (mostly americans) seem to have. Sweat doesn't actually smell, as long as you keep yourself clean. Yeah you sweat a bit, and then you dry up, and it's no big deal. Just take a shower every day, which you really should be doing anyway.

How difficult is it to replace the wheels and tires on a road bike with disc brakes? I just ordered my first road bike but the wheels and tires are the biggest compromise on it and will be the first thing I'm going to change when it's time for upgrades.

You could transfer the rotors to the new wheels, I guess. It's definitely a job you should have a torque wrench for, though. Also, remember to look into brake bedding when you get the bike or new pads/rotos.

And price varies wildly. I think the guy who did mine gave me a good deal ($100 for strip and paint) just cos he liked bicycles but I was getting ~$300 quotes, or like $150 just to strip.

It's not as nice as a really nice wet paint job but i think it looks pretty good, waayyy better than rattlecan, and it's tough.
They did a pretty good job not going too deep into the ritchey stamp on the dropouts so these guys would be able to do a lugged frame and keep those details looking good. Some shitty places will lay it on too thick and obscure the lugs. Yours is just tigged though right? Much easier job.

They did a pretty average job plugging the threads so ideally i should have chased them all but I didn't i just forced stuff in and it went ok. If you run an external bearing bottom bracket it is worth having the bb faced after painting which most good shops can do.

They'll be able to do something close to Celeste too. It's more expensive if you stray from standard colours but they can basically do anything if you pay them. I'd also consider pink because Pantani and the giro. Or black with lots of celeste decals would be cool. Or pay for metallic flecks in the powder would look really cool like a very dark purple with metallic flecks.

I also recommend you try to talk a car bodyshop paint place to clear coat it after you powder, if they're doing a car at the same time, it would be very cheap and it will make it look better and last better. Maybe decal it before clearing. I didn't do that and i kinda regret it.

Crank set, front mech, both shifters, cassette, rear mech, and probably need to redish the rear wheel too. And I don't even know that the frameset in question has cable stops or routing for a front mech. I would be surprised if it did not but it is certainly possible.

The dude said it's not real suspension, just imitation, as the fork is actually rigid.
I don't think is true but I got it cause I wanted it rigid anyway.

I've never seen this before but it does looks very real suspension to me.

A damper is a mechanical feature of a suspension strut. It reduces the rate at which the strut decompresses after being compressed by e.g. a bump in the road.

Suspension with no damping is useless. Does nothing. It soaks up the hit and then a moment later it transfers the force of that hit to the rider anyway, because it has no other way of dissipating that force.

Modern bicycle dampers are very sophisticated and tend to have different types and amounts of tuneable damping for different amounts of travel, so that the way a fork soaks a big hit is different from the way it soaks up fast little bumps etc

I bought pic related a couple years ago. I wanted a bike suitable for touring. This steel frame road bike was too much of a deal and I was on a budget so I ended up going with it. I figured I could upgrade it as I go. Problem is, the frame doesn't account for tires much bigger than 28mm. I just replaced the 25mm stock tires with 28mm Continental Ride Tours. Is such a small tire tour worthy or will I end up hating myself if I try it?

You're not going to like this answer, but in your situation, 'touring' tyres are actually not good for touring on.
That's because they have thick rubber and puncture protection belts.
Fast road/ race clinchers have less rubber, fragile sidewalls, and are 'supple' which means they have a comfortable ride. Expensive folding gravel tyres are the same except less focus on low rolling resistance.

It's not a speed issue, but a comfort one. With wider tyres it's less pronounced because there's more volume and you can get away with running lower pressure. But if you're loading on 28s you'll need to have them pretty well inflated to avoid pinch flats. You'll find a 'touring tyre' to be quite harsh ride on, especially on rougher roads. Whereas a racefag tyre or a slower supple gravel meme tyre will be comparatively much more comfortable.
Even racefag/gravelmeme tyres in smaller sizes like 25 vs 32 are more comfortable riding than their paranoid tourfag kevlarnigga equivalents. Give it a go with your Ride Tours. See what I mean. If you want more comfy, buy some GP5k or compromise with 4 seasons.

You pay twice as much for them, they last half as long, and there is the everpresent risk of a little rock slashing the sidewall and it's kill. But that's a risk that's worth taking.

The real issue with touring on road-width tyres is it doesn't protect your wheels so much. Wheels are the component most prone to failure for touring. I've met so many tourists with broken wheel stories. So yeah, that is more likely to happen. It's kinda hard to tell if your wheels are well built or if they'll hold up or not. If your wheels already aren't true or they have demonstrably uneven spoke tension, take them to a racefag shop to get trued beforehand.

Lots of guys tour on road bikes, but you're limited because you can't take it on gravel/dirt with that tire size. You also can't carry a ton of weight on frame, since panniers on short chainstays = heel strike.
But there are guys who tour on road bikes in a serious way. You can either pack ultra-light, setting it up like a bikepacking bike, or you can get a trailer. They have lightweight 1 wheel trailers that are pretty sleek. There is a third option that is a little stupid and expensive, but you can cover to 650b wheels. It's going to cost a fuck load and probably not be worth it.

The bike itself is awesome for what it is. Steel road bikes rule. Just don't force it to become a bike that it isn't. If you're still broke, get a rigid MTB and set it up for touring. If you aren't planning to ride across the country an old MTB is perfect. Just throw some racks on it and do your short tours on it. You'll figure out what you want and then when you're ready for a huge ass tour you can buy a legit touring bike for it.

stupid question but has anyone ever heard of a 3/8 24 tpi hollow axle? I bought a abus locking skewer set super cheap (20 dollars) for my coaster bike build but didn't realize coaster brakes used different threads. I've seen 3/8 axles but nothing with 24 tpi. I'm probably just going to end up locking the back wheel + frame with my u lock but I'd love to convert it if possible

that's not true man. Even loaded. You just run into issues with washboarded or golfball rock chunk or really muddy/loose dirt/gravel.
A lot of gravel roads are as road-bike friendly as asphalt

Never heard of anyone using a coaster brake hub with a quick release axle. There's probably a good reason for that.

Absolutely true. I just assumed the same techniques would apply. Does your normal saddle position have more than average setback though?

One of the main reasons I upsized and got treaded tires is because I get flats way too often just riding around on my bad city streets. Already had two this summer which is what prompted me to finally change the tires. Comfort is obviously an important factor, but avoiding flats seems like a bigger priority.

I've found these new tires to be a bit more comfortable than the smaller race tires I was using. Not by a lot, but it's noticeable (I'm taking into account the bad shape of the roads I ride on of course. The race tires were probably more comfortable on fresh smooth pavement).They also feel safer going around bends and riding on sandy/dirty tarmac.

and i guarantee you in the same size good race tyres are just quantifiably more comfortable and with better grip than touring tyres.

No but it's not your front tyre lifting, it's the rear tyre slipping.
You have to find the sweet spot between those 2 things and it's gonna be seated.
Panniers help the front tyre stay planted quite a lot but do little for rear traction.

It's an issue with mtbs too on steep climbs.

I'm just really not sure what you mean, or on what kind of bike you're going to need to shift your weight forward to keep the front wheel grounded and where your rear is not going to be at risk of slipping when you do so
Ie, which climb and which bike it's only possible to ride out of the saddle (considering the gearing is low enough to spin).
I would have thought that would only be a short wheelbase road bike on a 12%+ climb road climb in the dry with grippy tyres.

I think you just have broader and deeper experience in the matter than I do. My only experiences riding slippy gravel on steep grades have been on a long wheelbase 29er with 2"+ low-pressure high-volume tires. Weight over the rear wheel just worked.

Yes, that should be enough as long as you have side reflectors on your spokes or tires.

Word to the wise: don't cheap out. If you buy shit lights they'll fail you in all kinds of strange ways and you'll end up spending more money replacing them than if you just bought good quality ones in the first place, plus all the extra fucking around.

That's pretty expensive. I bought mine for about $25 each. You can obviously go as high as you want but there's diminishing returns. Just don't buy shitty dollar store/walmart stuff and you'll probably be fine.
