Is there anything we can do about bike theft
Everyone I know who says they want to commute by bike or similar says they would but are afraid of their bike being stolen or vandalized

I know Japan has some really cool underground parking but could there be a less expensive or simpler solution to this?

It sucks this stops so many people from even trying

Yes. And a good enough lock to rest easy knowing no one's gonna put an angle grinder to it for a minute in public, unless I'm dumb enough to lock it in a remote place overnight. What we need aren't parking garages everywhere, it's indoors parking where people live, and simply decent bike racks elsewhere and for riders to be willing to put a few bucks extra into a better lock.

It's not that hard. I've been riding for decades and never got a single bike stolen, only a front wheel because I was dumb enough to lock it outside of a football stadium shortly before the match ended

Park your bike in places that would be suspicious for thieves to dig around in, not in broad view of the street. Contrary to what some retarded boomers think, nobody is going to stop a bike thief in the act - you can be part of making that difference if you catch one, but expecting someone else to step in is foolishness.
Lock your shit with at least 2 locks. One of them should be a normal Ulock but the other should be something that will disable the bike and cause a thief to crash if it's ridden for more than a few feet. Bonus if it's less noticeable, because ultimately the goal is:

>2 fucking up any bastard who tries

Doesn't work against organized truck-based theft but for individuals using delinquents, alcoholics and crackheads as patsies it's way more useful. And easier for a cop to find some asshole running away on foot than biking.

Only idiots get their bicycle stolen. Here some tips

- Do not use wheel with quick release, they are an invitation to the thief
- Use a good quality lock
- Lock the frame, a wheel and an immovable object (like a pole or a tree)
- Use an internal gear hub on a classic steel frame: from far away they look like a cheep single speed bicycle and nearby they scare any wheel thief with theirs complex hub mechanism
- Make a nigger or a nafri friend and walk with him while pushing your bicycle, then you'll have to worry only about the gypsies

Even if that was true, commuting in a car is more common than commuting on a bike by *two* orders of magnitude, so on average you're still more likely to get culturally enriched on a bike. :^)
