If they're truly old and hardened then you can't do anything but replace them, but if the problem is contamination, or to make them slightly better temporarily you can scrape off the outer layer to expose fresher rubber underneath.

Bingo, reinvigorated brake blocks, this works on all rubber brake blocks, I had some 47 year old blocks off an old peugeot that had been left outside for decades, blocks were like fucking bullets, all shrunken and rock hard, I'm not joking, they are like stones, but next day after a run in the oven they were like new, back to their normal size and shape while delivering perhaps the best stooping power I have ever experienced from any rim brake anywhere in the world, and I say that without a gram of irony.

No good way to answer that since it depends on lots of factors including your skills as a rider. Just go ride and try progressively more challenging things, you'll naturally find the limits of what you can handle on a particular bike.

Either of those are fine pedals, but the first really are for casual use only. The second has raised pins for grip if you care about efficiency and/or staying on the pedals on rough terrain.

The raised metal pins really helped me put in extra power, they also stop you from slipping in the rain. Yes those pedals are fine but more important is what the bearrings are made out of. Cheap pedals often don't turn smoothly. The PD-GR500 looks great

I wouldn't count on it. Pedals are a consumable wear item. What makes you think the pedals would last longer than the rest of the bike? Do you get new bikes that often?

Is there any important difference between bikes designated for children and those designated for adults (e.g., durability or something). The weight limit on the kids' bike is about half the weight limit of the adult XXS bike despite being roughly the same size, so I'm going with "yeah, they're mostly just toys".

I'm around 5ft as well. I tried out some random bikes at a store and the one that I can ride most comfortably is a 20" wheel BMX. They had almost no stock left though since an influx of college students suddenly bought up everything, so the only others I tried were a 24" BMX and a 26". I haven't properly ridden a bike in years so I don't know much, but my understanding is that a 20" wheel is like a preteen size and you mean a ~20" frame, which is rather large?
The issue I had with the other ones were that I could not step on the ground without stretching so I'd tip over awkwardly whenever the bike wasn't going fast. It isn't super obvious and otter-like, but I may have slightly shorter legs for my height. I'm not completely sure on my inseam.

that's not how anyone should ride a bicycle

The seat should be high enough, so your leg is almost fully extended at the bottom of the pedal stroke, for efficient, joint-healthy riding. And that pedal is a distance from the ground. So you can't just put a foot down. To stop, you have to come off the seat and stand over the top tube, or, lean the bike and point your toes.

So you're trying to solve a 'problem' which is just inherent to riding bicycles by getting something made for children.

Sorry I don't think I phrased it properly. If I wanted to get on or off then I had to tilt sideways to make the bike literally diagonal to the ground, which was awkward and sometimes made the bike fall over by being so unbalanced. "Stretching" wasn't the right word since it's more like reaching out and having a short fall to hit the ground. The people in your pic are able to be on the bike seat and touch the ground; I couldn't do both simultaneously. I admit I don't know much about bikes but my impression is that it's not right to need to fall out of a bike in order to dismount.

All of my bikes are 19"or 47cm, it's not super common to find sizes under that when it comes to road bikes that I have found. If your feet can be firmly planted on the ground when riding, your seat is absolutely too low.
But as you are talking about BMX bikes, I can't say I have much of an idea, but the fit for that would be completely different than that of a road bike or any other bike. Maybe the extreme sports or alternative sports whatever boards might be more help if you are looking for a BMX bike, it's not something I've really ever seen discussed here.

Something's wrong with your fit or proportions or technique. Normally on a BMX, you're out of the saddle for full leg extension. You shouldn't have to go to the childrens section. Just grab something in women's sizes.

Some older bikes will have size listings in inches, some will have them in cm. Sometimes bikes from the same category will only be listed in inches while the next model up is only listed in cm.

I have sold 20 and 24 inch wheel bikes to old people who are very short and have problems with their knees or hips
the people with hip replacements seem to prefer swinging their leg over the rear wheel

mini velos are light and fast and have 20 inch wheel sizes combined with a larger frame so that long seat posts and tall handle bars are not needed
the opposite approach is something like a Raleigh model 20 Compact
or better yet one of the many bikes that imitate its form but use the more common 68x35 mm BSA bottom bracket

don't buy a kids bike. you just need to be able to stand over the top tube, as little as 1-2 inches of clearance against your crotch is fine. there are some bikes that have smaller 650b wheels for their smaller sizes to help make a less compromised geometry with less toe overlap against the front wheel but they're a bit niche and maybe more expensive than what you're looking for.

this isn't new. cruisers and city/commute style bikes have been available like this forever. if you find yourself spending too much time in the smallest cogs, just get a bigger chainring. my daily/city commuter is 1x9 - 48x11-34.

The only thing you're not going to be able to do on that is bomb down hills like a madman, seeing as you'd be pedalling 120RPM at 50km/h. It has good solid fender lugs so would be good for hauling when needed.
other than that, it's an alright bike for modest money.
the handlebars/stem are very wide and 1 piece and the bike is 14-ish kg and is Tuff-Steel™ but that shouldn't bother you if you just want to get around.

Take the wheel out and draw file (look it up) with a medium-coarse file, it'll take off the outer layer of hard rubber off and give the pad more grip.
It helps a fair bit, but is no substitute for replacing the pads long term.
Given that the brakes are responsible for your safety, I'd advocate for just replacing them unless they're impossible to find.
Always be wary of pads and tyres of uncertain age.

Look for a road bike with 650B tyres in a smaller size. It solves the problem of toe overlap but you should make sure the reach is right as some are women specific geo and may be pretty compact in the top.

Decent flat pedals will have replaceable pins and you can get a long life out of them if you know how to service the bearings.
If you're talking SPD-SL, the older alloy body pedals are tough as nails and the wear plate can actually be replaced in them. They often have much stronger springs than modern pedals too for some odd reason.

You've used a cheese grater before? it's the same as that.
Be sure to scratch up a slightly bigger area than what the patch covers, and let the glue tack a bit before pressing it hard up to the tube.

depends on pedals and type of riding you're doing. ball of the foot over pedal spindle is the "traditional" way, according to road racing discipline, and works fine with a stiff cycling shoe and foot retention - it doesn't work so well outside of that context. semi-midfoot or full midfoot position is a lot more comfortable and stable. personally i ride semi-midfoot, with the ball of the foot over the front corner of the pedal. if you feel like reading up about this see:

Is it really worth buying cycling specific clothing if you do a lot of riding? I usually wear adidas tiro football pants and a slightly oversized t shirt tucked in which probably creates a decent amount of drag. I usually wear air max 95s for shoes which are pretty heavy as well.
I pretty much only ride old steel road bikes so I'm wondering how much of a mechanical disadvantage my clothing leaves me at.

The bib shorts are a hell of a lot more comfy and give you more freedom of movement

Shoes are more energy efficient and safer when properly set up, but they require effort and some knowledge to set up correctly or you are going to be prone to repetitive stress injuries or at least pain

Jerseys are nice too but that's more about aero which is trivial compared to the advantages of comfort, efficient pedal stroke, and safety

Yeah Aero was actually my main concern, also not having bars stuffed in my pants pockets would be nice as well. But safety? Are they better at protecting against spills and road rash?
Shoes would be the biggest investment since I do have more than one bike, so that's already a couple hundred on pedals if I'm going clipless, not to mention the shoes themselves. I also have a problem with my shoes being hot as fuck.
What about pants instead of shorts? I'm not the biggest fan of shorts and long sleeve/pants would be better for being out in the sun since I burn easily and it's pretty brutal here. Also the wind chill at night sucks, I'm usually freezing after a ride that's any longer than an hour and a half.
What about sweat? Cotton t shirts are absolutely miserable when you're absolutely drenched, but polyester pants are a bit better. What about socks? Underwear?

you should wear bib tights in the winter

don't wear underwear with bibs, they're meant to have nothing (except maybe chamois cream) worn underneath

there's a road fork being sold near me, looking up the model says it should have an aluminium steerer tube but it's carbon in the pictures, and the seller says it's been replaced. how exactly is that procedure done and how high is the likelyhood of that fork splitting back in twain?

Has anyone heard of Joytech hubs before? They are paired with an Araya rim, not sure if the rear wheel has a freewheel or cassette body on them, but I'm unsure about the hubs so I thought I'd ask before I contact the seller.

If you know the brake model there might be technical docs online or something that might say, but otherwise I'd take the bolt or another nut (if you're only missing one) to home depot and ask the wagies there to match it. (Always go there before you go to a bike shop, the same nut that costs a dime at home depot will cost $5 at a bike shop)

It's probably not that. It's probably either the caliper is siezed, or there's a lot of friction in the cable run.

Unbolt the cable, and see if the caliper operates freely with your hand. If not you could try loosening the bolt for the arms a little bit, even if that means introducing a little bit of play, or you could take it apart and clean and grease it. That's totally doable it's just fiddly and if you get washers in the wrong places it will never work right and there are often tiny little brittle plastic things to break.

If the caliper is moving freely it's probably the cable. You can test that too by holding the open end in your hand and operating the lever, see how smooth/free it is.

If both those things are smooth then your mounting bolt is probably bottoming out before it clamps or something like that, but that shouldn't even matter as it should self centre even if it's not tight.

This could also just be a good reason to get a nicer dual pivot caliper in the front, even if that means drilling your fork for recessed mounting (which is easy).

Also yeah. All road calipers/levers are basically compatible if you wanted to upgrade to dual pivots (or in the front atleast). I'd bide your time and try buy some shiny-era shimano 105/ultegra/da ones cheap. Or grey tricolour. It's a good upgrade.

if weight is a concern it should be noted that most of that is in the spindle, the body of the pedal does not weigh a lot unless it is very large and thick

the pedals you posted seem to have cup and cone bearings, with such bearings its important to keep an eye on bearing preload, and the condition of the bearing race
thinner pedals sometimes have IGUS bushings instead of ball bearings or Cartridge bearings
maybe bearing type is not a big deal but if the pedal does not use a type of bearing or axle that has spare parts and rebuild kits available the pedal will have a shorter life overall
flip side is that maybe its cheaper and less hassle to buy a new pedal than to rebuild an old one

Since the previous anon didn't mention it, Uniglide wasn't around for all that long and is pretty rare these days. It's the kind of thing you might see a once or twice per season if you work as a bike shop mechanic. As for how it compares to HG, shift performance is basically indistinguishable from a 1980's freewheel, but the hubs are more durable, just like HG, because the bearings were moved closer to the end of the hub.

Okay, so I have to pull off my cassette to check for external threads then. I know the bike came with an HG cassette so I'm skeptical. Only considering a UG one because it's the same tooth count as what came on it and I couldn't find a new HG cassette that was the same before. This site says Uniglide was discontinued in 1989, so if you're replacing the original cassette in 2021 the chances of it being uniglide compatible are jack and shit.

Getting a cassette with different tooth counts may or may not be a problem, depending on what derailleur you have and what the tooth counts are. You could think of it as an opportunity to improve your gearing for what kind of riding you do.

if it's a road bike those hubs should be the same width
the freehub on the 11spd wheel is longer but the splines are the same, so you just run spacers behind the cassette.

I wanna get a new groupset for my old bike since it's aging and components don't work well anymore.

What I want to know is how compatible is this with bikes, most specifically the cranks.

My bike is a 2014 model Trek X-Caliber 7. I got some shitty Shimano Acera drivetrain, the bottom bracket is threaded and has a 73mm shell.

Is fitting cranks pretty universal to bikes? If I get this https://www.mtbdirect.com.au/sram-dub-bsa-external-threaded-bottom-bracket in the 73mm size, it should fit the bike and the new sram cranks would fit it?

This was a consideration but I didn't want to spend too much when I already have a bike, and with a service + parts to fix it at my LBS i'd be nearing the price of a new drivetrain.

That link was just an example, i'm open to cheaper avenues I just mainly wanted to get my head around crank/bb compatibility with frames.

Last time I worked on it was over a year ago, and I had addressed all those things but the bike kept eating cables in the shifters, everything is still loud and crunchy when I pedal, and the replacement BB I use doesn't seem to last that long.

I don't ride it anymore because I ride a different bike that's suited for road but I wanna get back into MTB trails and stuff.

I think so yeah.
threaded bb shells are pretty standard.

Sometimes a complication with mtb cranks/frames can be chainstay clearance.

Seriously confused and need somebody to redpill me on single speed freewheels & sprockets.
I have a flipflop hub, the single speed part that I use has 18 teeth, I'd like to switch to 16 teeth. Now I thought all I had to do was remove the sprocket from the freewheel, and put a compatible 16T on. But then I'm also looking at freewheels, and they all have a sprocket built onto it/come with one. Am I supposed to buy both at once?

yeah the freewheeling mechanism is built into the sprocket, like how thread-on freewheels work.

it is possible sometimes to take them apart but it's gonna be to service the pawls/bearings/grease in the freewheeling bit, not to modify it.

You just buy another freewheeling sprocket.

The other thing you might be confused by people sometimes doing is getting single cogs to put on cassette hubs with spacers which freewheel

Like other anon said you can jerryrig a HG onto a UG freehub by putting all but the last ring of HG cassette onto the freehub, then use the last ring of a UG cassette to lock it down.

Also some freehubs are both HG and UG, they have both external threads for UG and internal threads for HG

Also also, you can sometimes replace the freehub just by unbolting it from the hub and screwing another on. Some hubs dont work, in which case you have to disassemble the freehub, and Frankenstein a HG freehub outerbody to the internal UG screwdown part

Best tool or method for cutting outer cables, I bought a really nice set of cable cutters, (£60 Draper) and they crush the metal interior with every cut, no matter how I cut, tried slow steady cuts, sharp quick cute etc, scores of attempts and zero decent results, before I start on another set of cables what tool will simply cut the cables and leave them in great condition?

I like carbon personally, but you want the best bike you can get for $3k all-in, see if you can get a good aluminum road bike and then upgrade the wheelset (and probably the saddle and add a good computer and better pedals etc)

Disc brakes are amazing, but only if they're hydraulic. Cable discs fucking suck, and don't let anyone tell you "no but the GOOD cable discs", there is no such thing, trust me I've tried the "good" ones.

Frame material makes almost zero difference in ride quality. You already have a carbon fork+seatpost and good tires and that's 95% of ride feel. Seatpost is thicc (30.9) on that model so might make it stiffer than otherwise, but idk how much difference that makes in practice.

Conceivably, but depending on your standards almost certainly not enough to justify $3k on its own. Would probably be a couple pounds lighter, but if you have money to spend you could lighten your old one up a bunch too with lighter wheels and a better groupset.

You need to be in the right gear to do that - too high and you're just straining your back, too low and all your effort will go towards maintaining stability. If you can't get a rhythm going you're probably in too low a gear, so shift down 1-2 gears just before you stand up on the pedals.

3000 euros is still at the point where you can consider a high end aluminium bike with good wheels etc and if you want to ride on a more serious level you may want to consider budgeting for a bike computer and a power meter etc

for example (german prices)
trek emonda alr 6 disc costs 2.599,00 € and weighs 8.51 kg
trek emonda sl 5 disc costs 2.899,00 € and weighs 9.15 kg
so carbon is not strictly better at this price, and keep in mind some carbon is very cheaply made, don't buy aliexpress or mickey mouse brand frames

it's a chain tensioner
pretty normal on singlespeed conversions
SS you normally tension the chain by sliding the wheel back and forth in the dropouts, but most modern frames don't allow that.

how much damage do you get from stone chips in the bottom bracket area on a road bike with modern paint with clearcoat? like if you ride on roads but with stupid amounts of gravel on it in the winter like pic related. if it's just some superficial damage which can be polished out, that's fine, if it's likely to pierce through the clearcoat i would rather put a little bit of protection at least at the bottom of the downtube.

it depends. durability of paintjobs heavily depends

I'd only really worry about that if it was carbon. Even if you do damage the paint on a metal bike it's still only really superficial damage, it's not sketchy. It doesn't even impact the lifespan of the bike.

Gravel riding is more the equivalent of taking your bottom tier Peugeot 206, putting on bigger tires and going out to the local dirt roads to kick up some dust. It doesn't get you better performance, it won't make you into a rallye racer but you will have a good time.

Wouldn’t matter much wether metal or crabon frame, you get microscopic dents and scratches in the lacquer or clear coat anyways on this gravelly stuff. If you are concerned about that there are clear stickers that can be applied on exposed frame surfaces.

If you go for a big road chainring then you consequently need small steps on the small rings otherwise you are just larping.
If you want to go into very hilly terrain and/or do gravel or cross country, go for triple chainring or more compact double.

You should never sway side to side while sprinting. That's wasted energy. You should be resisting the upwards force of your downstroke by pulling as hard as possible on the bars with the opposing hand, using your whole body. Go do sets of hill stompies and you will get it.

I bought a wahoo elemnt roam, and the out front mount fits on my 31.8mm bars, but do they make out front mounts for a 25.4 bar? otherwise I have to use the little "stem"mount one which I'm not that much a fan of since it takes up real estate for lights and whatnot.

as the open cell foam drys out it shrinks and looses its elasticity, after around 30 years of use it kind of flakes and rips off

I found ordinary bar tape and solid rubber grips subject my hands to too many fine vibrations, somewhat like using an old petrol lawn mower for too long

I was talking to th elb sguy about how I bought vittoria latex tubes for $16 each, he went on to tell me that they are fake and how he gets his ""latex"" tubes straight from the supplier(don't remember the name).
I felt the tube and it was more of a yellow hard plasticky feeling tube. I couldn't remember the term TPU during this interaction, but that's probably what he meant, right? Why would latex tubes be expensive or feel like a thicker plastic when they're made to be as light as possible? He was saying they run upwards of $40 per tube, but I have never seen a yellow latex tube before.
Honestly, I don't even know what latex feels like. But I've always imagined it as a relatively soft rubber.

I want easy on the spot navigation.
I don't care about prepared routes, because if that's the concern, I can use my smartphone.

Having to speed down or even stop because I ended up the wrong way or having to check how I go to another destination is something I want to avoid.
A fluid ride is the aim, and if a bike computer cannot give me that, I might as well stick with the smartphone, as my rides are not longer than 6 hours in total including breaks, which is covered by the phone battery.

Bought an 87 centurion accordo rs and everything is there but the wheels are mismatched. from my minor fiddling, the derailleur doesn't have enough travel to reach the first gear. I do have a 7 speed cassette I could throw on there and make it work in friction mode, but I'd still need to buy a spacer. If I just throw some grip tape on there and change the housing without changing any gearing I could break even easily, but it'd probably be an easier sale if it worked in every gear. The b screw is all the way out so that's not the issue either.

Ordered state 4130 in April.
I think month or 2 ago two spoke broke from the rear wheel.
I took the bike to local store and they repaired the spokes for 30€.
Now one more spoke broke.

Should I take the bike to the local repair store to fix the one spoke for 30€?
Last time the guy said that it might just work or it's already damaged and every spoke would need to be changed and maybe the hub for about 120€?

I could contact the simplebikestore.eu, maybe they offer change wheel for the faulty one but sending the package would be around 45€.

Back your cable adjusters of 90% of the way first before you tension your cables and tighten the cable pinch bolts (also make sure the cable is routes through the bolts property.) Let your low limit screws out and get your cable tension just high enough to keep the chain on the smallest sprocket/chainring first, then bring in the low limit screws until they start moving the derailleurs to bigger rings and then back it off a tiny touch.
The high tension is the same deal, but getting the cable tension high enough to shift into the biggest sprocket at the back may require you to turn the tension knob on the rear derailleur to get enough cable tension.

If this process doesn't go smoothly, the 2 main things I would look at are rear derailleur hanger alignment and front derailleur rotational alignment (easily seen by looking at the FD from am eagle's view)

Latex tubes are far superior to TPU in both price and rolling resistance. Vittoria are great and challenge are even lighter but don't do well over about 90psi.
Worth every penny when it comes to comfort, speed, and a few cheap watts.

How can I fix a tiny pin prick hole on the side of my back tire? The tire is tubeless but the goo doesn't seem to be able to get into the hole no matter how much I pump the tire and spin it so the goo goes there. Right now I duct taped a piece of old tube over the hole along with some rubber glue on the bottom side of the tube to cover the hole. It's working a little bit but not fully, it's all I had. And I don't have any goo myself to retry tubeless.

The hole is like literally smaller than a sewing needle. But I can't seem to get the hole stopped up. The tape and glue is able to hold about 50-70% of the air in but the tire is running flat if I ride it. I don't want to spend 150+ on a new tire just for this tiny piece of shit hole.

TPU tubes are supposed to be the ultimate in light weight and puncture resistance. they have mixed reviews so far though, better wait until there are more reviews especially on the newer ones like pirelli p zero, schwalbe aerothan and revoloop. tubolito x-tubo comes with a 1 year warranty against punctures so even if you're budget conscious, if you ride a lot the price might be worth it for the supposed reliability and free replacement even if you get a puncture.

You're on the money there lad, but you're also assuming that puncture resistance is a bonus based on the idea that you're going to throw a tube away after a puncture and therefore waste money.
There's literally no good reason not to use a small glued patch on a tube unless it's a CST or other super cheap and "not worth the effort" tube.
Latex inners and tubs with latex inners are still king of speed and will be for the forseeable future, weight does help but the interaction between inner tube/tyre/rim is too big a factor to ignore.

The challenge tubes are very light at 60g and are thin as a result. I've had a few spontaneously pop at pressures over 100 and they're sketchy over 90.
The Vittoria one the other hand are a touch over 70g and are very reliable and tough comparitively; but both brands give an amazing ride and are super fast and supple.
I can't speak for Michelin, Soyo, and vredestein; but I would assume the Michelin would be pretty solid whereas the other 2 are super light and likely delicate.

Fixing a vintage Peugot and I wanted to make the whites on the frame a little more vibrant. So far I've cleaned/gotten rust off of the frame, put on a coating of primer over the old white paint, and followed with a coating of enamel paint. Both primer and enamel paint are Rustoleum brand, both were applied with a paint roller and brush. Once the paint dries, is there anything else I need to do or will it stay on the frame well? Did I royally fuck up in any way? Inb4 "should have spraypainted it," I'm not fixing this to flip it or anything so I'm not too bothered by brush marks/inconsistencies.

Could be crappy sealant (or maybe no sealant?), sidewall holes are harder to fix too I think. Take the wheel off and prop it up somehow so the sealant will be puddled directly over the hole, then pump it up. Otherwise I guess take it to a shop and see what they can do.

Yeah, it was super funky trying to ride with them on the bike they came on, but I was just testing out the bike so I wasn't really testing the bars themselves.

How much of a difference would I notice if I went from a Tange 1000 cromoly frame to a Reynolds 531 granted that the components, geometry, and setup were all the same? Wouldn't it just be slightly lighter, while being slightly stiffer, which arguably isn't really any issue unless you are say a professional competitor?
What about a Reynolds frame(501,531,853, etc.) to a titanium frame under the same circumstances?
Are weight and longevity the only real factors that come into play here?

look for local auctions (the boomer money laundering type of auction with antiques etc), pawn shops, businesses that repair abandoned bikes that the police give to them after a holding period and sell them to students

If there's a burr on the rim it could easily damage a tube, but you can easily check for those just by feeling. Also check that the rim tape/strip is fully covering all the spoke holes and isn't torn at all. If it happens again pay close attention to where the hole in the tube is in relation to the wheel and examine the wheel and tire near that spot extremely closely.

Ignore the gcn tard, it's the michelins that are shit tier t. amazon reviews. Bell is aight, I used them for years on my beater bike before I got rims that were too deep for the valves and had to switch to more expensive bontrager ones, which seemed to puncture easier.

That's like the original pads? Or at least old ones? Current models are R55C4 (cartridge type) and R50T5 (non-cartridge, R50T4 and lower exist but suck, avoid). Both are built so you can adjust toe-in.

But yes that's the original replacement. Considering that the price for the stock pad is about the same as a cartridge replacement I may just go that route. Those replacement pads are even less than the non cartridge pad and I don't see why I'd need to replace the shoe unless it became horribly damaged somehow. Seems like a better idea.

I had a Claris group bike for a few years(bought around 2018, don't remeber specific model numbers), sold it, bought a few older bikes with DT(indexed and friction) and from a shifting aspect they just feel so much fucking better? Do I just have odd preferences or are Claris shifters just that bad? My main gripe was with the actuation travel vs the instant click click of an indexed Dt shifter,
I should also note that I have tiny hands, along with this being my only brifter experience as well.

Quality of shift feel has a lot to do with how and how well the cable and housing are set up and routes. Claris can be just fine with clean cable runs, ferrules, nokons, and a perfect rear loop. Super Record can be dogshit with excessive slop or tension in the front housing run. Chances are your Claris bike was just not put together by a competent mechanic. DT shifters naturally have an advantage in this regard.

Howdy, I have checked both park-tool and Sheldon for info on how to fix my rear derailleur Shimano shifting cable anchor setup.
My bike is a shit walmart mtb, and instead of a proper anchor through-cable bolt it has a screw-down washer that pins the cable down onto the washer with a plate. The plate has an extended hook end to keep the cable in place, and has come loose.
Regardless of fiddling I cannot rotate this hook end to more or less better set the metal part to actually tighten down the cable, keeping my rear derailleur in the smallest gear and obviously a too-loose derailleur cable; shifting my shimano gear at the handlebar is useless and does nothing, as expected. Sheldon has little info on this and Parktool only has info on messing with the handlebar end of the wire.
Should I just buy a new anchor washer and plate? Washer and plate type shown in pic related
The cable runs between the hooked end of that washer and the bottom of the screw assembly. Yes, I have tried removing the top screw, but the washer seems to be stuck on. I can pull the cable taut of course but it'll loosen on its own because of that problem.

This is possible as well, before that bike I had a 90's mtb with slicks that I took apart and rebuilt multiple times and knew nothing about working on a bike with brifters or any modern amenities so I don't think I bothered. But I never enjoyed the bike so much to really give it that attention anyway. It was a pretty low end road bike after all.

yeah that was my main issue. It was kind of the same feeling of having an older manual car and switching to one of those faux manual cars that shift at the press of a button i guess.

It only feels unfortunate because at some point I'd like to try a higher end modern bike to reap all of the benefits of that, but if brifters aren't my thing I don't know if it's something I'd put up with. time will tell.

90% sure the cable should run through that little channel on the other side of the washer, not under the hooked end. The hooked end is there to mate with some groove or ridge or something on the derailleur to keep the washer from rotating as you tighten the nut.

Hard to say for sure. For me, it estimates ~12% high on average but is a lot more accurate on sprint wattage.
