I live in a third world country and we have a small train line called the Sun Rail. Last weekend my gf and I went to the nearby station and half of the terminals were inoperable; saying 'have a nice weekend' but for some reason we could still buy a preloaded ticket card. We arrived only 10 or so minutes before the train was due to come so I hurriedly bought a card with $25 bucks on it like a fucking retard only to realize that the Sun Rail doesn't run on weekends. At all. Fuck this place.

The Grand Canyon is extremely "meh," and those deserts suck. Skip it and save those extra days for the cities.

Instead, start in LA, ride up to SF on "The most beautiful route in America," (it is) then across on the fuckin Zephyr! The ride thru the Sierra is amazing, esp Donner Lake in the snowsheds. Then across to UT and you follow the Colorado River, which is amazing.

The rest seems cool for sure. Chicago is rad, like NYC if someone scrubbed it clean. Go to the Museum Of Industry there for sure. Maybe use one of those Grand Canyon days.

took a trip with them once. vancouver to seattle. the first bus on the way down there was unmarked and had very few passengers. it seemed quite small too, actually. the driver referred to it as the "coach" in his announcements, like "the coach will be arriving at [x] in 15 minutes for a restroom break" which i found quite funny as ive only ever taken transit bus where the drivers dont even talk to you. This was my very first time taking a bus for extended travel purposes so it raised the bar quite high

i think the reason it was unmarked is because they are owned by greyhound and i guess if they are short on buses they just swap out the official Bolt labelled ones with a regular old bus

On the way back up, new bus new driver. The bus was labelled with the Bolt logo and was quite official looking. Bus was pretty much full. But the driver was just meh. Not bad, did his job fine, but nothing outstanding service wise. The first driver really raised my expectations, iirc he was even wearing a uniform and cap and everything. The second driver was just wearing standard bus driver garb that you would see a city bus driver wearing (vest, jeans, the usual)

Being truthful, I suspected as much - like, not to sound like a grouch but, it's ultimately a big hole in the ground, right? - while untamed wilderness, unspoiled by 'no photos allowed' capitalism, is right there outside the train window. Good call with the Zephyr though.

there's a tourist-trap attraction at the Grand Canyon called the Skywalk, basically a big glass-bottomed platform extending out a ways over the canyon. entry costs around eighty dollars and personal items (including cameras and smartphones) are prohibited. but you can buy one of their pre-shot souvenir photos for a Treasured Memory!!. lol

Yeah frankly the GC is the biggest wasted of travel time I see regularly. You just kind of look across at a cliff that’s miles away. YouTube will show you the horrific tourist mob vibe on top of that.

Unspoiled nature is a big part of rail travel for me. When you’re just threading thru the woods on a ribbon of rail, no gas stations or 7-11s or semi’s. Sneaking through.

common sense suggests there should be a single standard 'engine noise' for EVs to produce. i'd take advantage of the flexibility and have one for daytime running, where it'd need to be audible in built-up environments, and a quieter/alternative nighttime running sound.

Not very good. The ones nearest me can get you into the city in the morning and out of it in the evening, that's about it. In the city they are better, especially in the densest corridor. But going outside of that corridor is too much hassle.

A brt system. I think the first line in the new system will be open in 2025 and I can't wait.

i'm hard of hearing; not legally Deaf but, pretty damn close. obviously that means my hearing probably isnt as sharp as yours, but this also means it's difficult for me to filter something out from background noise without taking a second to stop and focus. making it so vehicles don't make any sound *at all* would reduce my existence from 'getting by' to 'useless invalid'.

Adding to this, the busses are upgrading the payment system, and will allow all door boarding. The new system is qr based, which I feel is too slow when boarding at one door at checking in in front of the driver, but it might be good enough once you board at every door and check in at an on board validation station.

Paying a travel agent's markup is a good idea with that many moving parts, imo, plus there's peace of mind from having someone to call if you miss a connection etc.
