Why are brake discs for a bicycle allowed to cost as much as brake discs for my Honda? Why does the timing belt for it cost less than a bicycle drive belt? Why does motorcycle chain cost less than bicycle chain? Why is the cost per gram of Shimano brake oil approaching that of precious metals?

They make more parts than most car manufacturers, and have less different variations of each because unlike cars bicycles largely consist of universal interchangeable parts. Economy of scale is massively skewed towards bicycles and yet consumers don't see any of the benefits.

A bullshit exotic bike would be something genuinely one-off hand-made thing with custom components, stuff like handmade titanium frames and CNC-machined hydraulic brakes. My bike is factory made with standard parts, there are thousands of bikes identical to mine and tens if not hundreds of thousands with mostly the same kit, and all of that kit is toy-like compared to the lowest moped, nevermind a car. Car parts are harder to engineer, harder to produce and are far less universal, that brake disc might be different between trim levels of the same model, nevermind different ones.

Because bicycle components need to be light, so they use less material, making them less durable. Also, chains need to be able to flex sideways and jump from cog to cog when you're shifting gears, that's why single speed chains last a lot longer.

Because you're comparing a low end motorcycle to a high end bicycle made from expensive materials and optimized for weight reduction. A steel/aluminum bicycle made with same level of materials and precision as a 6k motorcycle costs like 500 dollars brand new. Also above around 6k, bicycle performance doesn't get any better, you're just paying for limited edition paint schemes and things like that, the same thing happens in the motorcycle and car world.

It's the same in many other industries too, for example the clothing and shoes industry. Shit costs nothing to make but sells for hundreds, sometimes thousands of shekels.

Bike parts are cheap as fuck and the R&D is a joke compared to something like a car or motorcycle and their respective parts. I once worked for in the sales department of a European frame manufacturer and the carbon frames we bought in container bulk from a chinese manufacturer (their open mold design which we just rebranded) cost 70-180€ each, 180€ was for a frame that sold for about 18x as much to the customer.
You would be surprised to see how cheap a shimano dura ace groupset really is kek.

Not even close. If a motorcycle or car were made to the standards of a bicycle (cheap or otherwise) it'd explode in a month. For example, never in the history of automobiles has there been a move to replace pressfit bearings with some different bullshit standard because the manufacturers gave up on drilling holes accurately.

Shimano stuff is expensive, what's new? Shimano will sell their crankset for $120 while randos on AliExpress will stamp out slightly lighter cranks nearly identical for $35.

I just bought a KMC 12sp chain for $32 CAD meanwhile shimano is $48 CAD. Is the shimano chain 50% better? Fuck no. My tektro disc brakes just use mineral oil and never have any issue. When it came time to choose 12sp cassette, shimano was like $150 and sunrace was $35, and sunrace was equally light. You can ignore shimano for nearly everything except on derailleur and end up with nearly the same shit.

I think we need to start having a serious discussion on /n/ about internal combustion scooters/small displacement motorcycles and how they are BY FAR the most reasonable, affordable, reliable, fuel-efficient and sensible options (at least for now in 2022) for general transportation. They literally offer a solution to almost every problem that comes up for cyclists, electric users, transit users, and cagies.
It's a tough pill to swallow but I think mass adoption coupled with relaxed regulations (no insurance/license for under 50cc, for example) would solve 90% of our problems.

Luckly the west is too retarded to figure this out so you're in luck if the thought of everyone scooting around on mopeds makes you seethe.

KMC chains are made in China, and are equipped on the majority of bikes under $2k here. My 1k bike came with a KMC chain. They aren't known to snap.

The ali chains do not appear to be fake to me, as in they seem about the same quality as the kmc chain that came on my bike. KMC has factories in China so i don't know why people think they're fake, maybe some are. Mine is in spec and works just fine. I bought a 12s quicklink locally and it's identical as what came with my KMC and the one that came with it fits just as tight as you'd expect. Buying it locally was like $15 more. KMC is already considered cheap and is on plenty of low end bikes. Just don't buy a $5 chain from ali.

I've bought tons of things off ali where I already had the "legit" model and bought a cheaper model from ali that was identical without the branding on it that worked just the same. I just checked the packaging for all the symptoms of fake, and they look legit.

They're not even much cheaper on ali, it was $38 on ali and I had a $6 coupon to make it $32, but ordering from KMC directly it has a price of $40. Either way it's much cheaper than shimano.

I got a fake or OEM bulk KMC chain from Amazon once and it was the only time a new chain dropped on me while I was throwing down stupid amounts of power and crashed. I don't understand why or how, everything was to spec. Now I only buy the KMC's K710 because that one is not as faked as much as regular style chains

Holy shit anon, I just discovered roller brakes because of you! I've seen them a few times but always assumed they were just a different design for a disc brake.
What is this strange new technology? I can't find any videos explaining how they work and if they're any good. Judging by a disassembly video they seem to be some sort of mini drum brake with the disc acting as a massive cooling fin? They look cool.

Give the popular chink stuff a try, seriously. The racework crankset have is a shimano/sram hybrid that uses a shimano hollowtech 2 bottom bracket but still uses sram GXP mounting chainrings, been rock solid for years and is lighter than the shimano deore crankset for my bike at a fraction of the cost. Rather have GXP but the SRAM bottom bracket for their GXP cranks is known to prematurely wear out at one side, so I don't want to use their crankset. Best of both worlds and 1/4 the price.

They skimp on cable housing to the extreme in their kits and even if you make perfect length cuts you still can run short these days with disc brakes on everything.

I was trying to figure out why my Ultegra RD shifter was jammed, look it up on youtube, video of the previous generation shifters showed there is a small hex nut to adjust that tightened the cam system. Ok, simple enough. I open mine up and instead of a simple hex head on the nut, there was a new special proprietary head that was some fucking weird pin spanner fucker.
So I think about there was actually a board meeting where some jewy japs sat down and decided there was an area in the shifter where they could jew users by designing and implementing a completely unnecessary new nut, and all the thousands and hundreds of thousands of dollars they would have had to spend to redesign the nut head, have proprietary nuts manufactured, redesign the area of the shifter housing, design and manufacture a new proprietary tool, etc.
