How do cyclists justify paying as much for a bicycle that a brand new motorcycle costs?
Yes, I understand you don't pay for gas or insurance but does that really justify paying thousands of dollars for some tubes?

If it's your hobby and you spend multiple hours a week riding then spending the extra $1500 or so doesn't really factor in.

It's like if you play guitar every weekend sure you can shred like a motherfucka on a $200 squire or you can pick up a $3000 Black and white clapton strat custom shop. This is my first bicycle I bought myself
Used to ride as a kid but haven't for over 15 years
Really enjoying it so far
I live on a mountain with a 30 degree incline for 2.2 km so having an ebike is fantastic
It's pedal assisted not throttle and the max speed the motor will do is 32kmh because of candian laws
I really like having a speedometer on a bicycle, I have been able to reach 50kph with the motor off

The most expensive bike I've seen anyone ride was around 10k, and it was a really well off guy who had one hobby he really loves.
I've seen just about every fat alcoholic guy named Mark spend at least 25k on a cruiser motorcycle to play road pirate.

I don't think it's that comparable.

Now the question of ebike vs used dual sport is another. That's a harder one to justify until battery price and performance improve.

hello fellow cyclists
I had 2 accidents in june, one kinda bad that left my shoulder wounded and hurting for a month (no hard feelings for this one, the cagie didn't/couldn't see me and I didn't see him, plus he stopped and everything) and then 2 weeks later, as I went back for the first time, a chick turned right in front of me while I was at full speed and despite my smashing of the breaks I still ended up in the rear of her car and falling down on my shoulder that still hurt. Plus this total cunt got out of her car, told me "I had my blinker", got back in her car and left without even checking if me or my bike were okay.

So well, besides the storytime part, I decided I was done with trusting cagies with my health and I'll start being more aggressive with these dipshits.
My first plan is against the cunts like picrel who literally park on the bycicle lane, whether it is completely or halfway.
If they're in their car, I shout some insults and make a fuck. If they're not, I give a blow in the rearview mirror, the goal being to only dislocate it (not that I mind if it breaks).

What are your thoughts on this? Should I continue?

Steepest road in the world has a 38% incline which is about 19 degrees.

Got my bike out of the shed and cleaned it off, it's been a while since I've ridden it. Is there a guide somewhere for general maintenance, and procedures to adjust the derailleurs?
Also needs some new tyres, is there any particular brands and tread type I should look for? It has off-road tyres on it now but I'll be riding it almost exclusively on roads.

Got this cheap on craigslist and I've been cleaning it up. Paint is a bit fucked in spots but it rides really good after a new chain, cassette and brakes.

Went for a couple test rides to see if this thing is viable. Yesterday, 20 miles on a flat road, didn't spin out or get frustrated with the speed.
Today, rode up a 1500ft hill, didn't have to get off to push.
So the gear ratio seems to be dialed in.
Now I have to fit the bike properly so I can get rid of that spacer tower.

Honestly, give me some crap bike, if the frame allows me to type in the right bike fit and the geometry is somewhat workable, all you need is to fix any mechanical issues, lube all moving parts (except brakes), and put some fast tires on that thing and you're 85% there.

Which on a really crap bike means replacing the brakes, shifters, crankset and all screws and bearings cause none of that works properly out of the box or is serviceable.

I've considered doing this and your post has given me some motivation. I take sidewalks because there is no such thing as a bike lane in this town and the one road with sidewalks all the way to the center of town has all kinds of trash on it that doesn't get cleaned up. I'm convinced people are just chucking bottles out of their cars, worst I saw was 4 separate patches of glass within the span of 60 seconds.

Do it, chief. A lot of people expect someone else to do it, so be that someone and inspire others. But bring a bucket and gloves with you for the obvious trash and any metal bits. One of my big regrets that day was not having something to put the obvious trash into and just pushing it off to the side. Pushing it out of the way is a temporary solution to the problem, but the fixable source of the problem (since it's illegal to assault people who throw trash to the wind) is to clean it up and properly trash/recycle it. Otherwise, it just becomes a problem for whoever happens upon it next.

Bought my bike used for like $200. Trek FX 7.3. I use it to go to work and school. I upgraded the brake levers, shifters, and front derailleur. The rear tire was backwards for some reason when I bought it. I plan to upgrade the brakes at some point.

I think with the advent of electric motors, increasing bike infrastructure, and fixiefags having kids, i'm seeing more and more fancy cargo bikes, especially ridden by women.

They're mostly overbuilt (as large cargo bikes) or underbuilt (as faux-sport bikes, or, excessively cheap and shitty 'utility' ebikes). I think we'll start to see more smart touring bike-esque e-bikes with better shopping utility but not so heavily focused on it and not outside the 'regular bike' box.

In the locations I checked I think they only had ~9kg offerings for mountain bikes only, and those weren't for sale. I asked around and was told that I'd have to go to a specialist retailer and that the Riverside models is pretty much the best they got as far as street bikes go if I'm not remembering this incorrectly.

Nothing immediately looks off, so you should indeed check your bearings and drivetrain (chain lubed?) like the other anon recommended. Probably your tires are not the most performance-oriented tires. I recommend buying road "training" tires which have better durability than racing tires while also having decent grip, acceptable rolling resistance, and low price.

I traded a meh Schwinn woodlands mountain bike from the early 90s for this rather nice Cannondale Criterium 3.0, made on Pi day in 1989. It has a SunTour EDGE groupset with Dia-compe brakes. I replaced the shift cables since they were both broken. The previous owner had them wound around each other and tucked into the cable guide on the bottom bracket to keep them out of the way I guess. The handlebars were tilted upwards at a 90 degree angle. The guy's zoomer son is really hard on bikes so he traded it to me so that it could go to someone who will respect it and take care of it. It rides very well, super fast and light. I put new tires on it, went from worn out ancient 23c contis to a pair of 28c Kenda Kwests (I had these on my single speed and I love them) and it's a perfect tire width and tread for where I live. I'm going to adjust the position of the brake levers to be more comfortable and put new bar tape on it and clean it up some more, but I love this thing already.

City bikes are about practicality, that includes fenders, racks, sturdy and low-maintenance parts — and nothing of that is light.
There are options, but be prepared to pay top dollar: Specialized Sirrus, Merida Speeder, Trek FX Sport, Giant Escape, Scott Sub etc.
Thing is, even full-carbon top-end Trek FX Sport 6.0, which retails for almost $3K, is over 9kg. Again — full carbon, including wheels. So you either need to re-evaluate what kind of bike you need, what weight you need or what's your budget.

Its got Suntour ARX derailleurs and an oldschool Sugino cycloid crankset. Since taking that previous pic I found the original shifter that goes on the square braise-on on the downtube. It trims the front shifter a bit when you shift the rear with a cam and it actually works pretty well.

I use a Riverside 120 and that one weighs 14kg stock as far as I remember and it's been a trusty workhorse to get me around Warsaw over the past few years despite the punishment I've put it through on and off the road. The handling seems to respond well to putting weight on the steering column if you have a bag strapped there too, so you could probably haul cargo on the rear too without compromising the weight distribution and still fly around sidewalks, though I haven't tested it fully loaded with anything strapped down on both ends. I do worry about it getting too heavy when dry though since just attaching the cargo rack I have puts a lot of dead weight (makes me wonder if they have ones made out of carbon fiber instead). That and the fact I'd perhaps like the brakes to be a little stronger, especially on the rear. I guess if I can't reliably carry it down the stairs leading to the metro then I'll know.

Also, I've also found it to be quite comfortable for long distances if you use an aftermarket gel seat (not that the stock seat is intolerable). I (personally at least) can ride around on this thing pushing all day (even when sitting mostly upright) without any issue.

I used to have similar shifters on my Miyata 1200, setup with Cyclone Mk II derailers. Worked wonderfully.

Those shifters are one of the rare things that Sheldon was wrong about--if you set them up correctly, the trim works fine.

Americans at the time thought the front brake was too hard to use and would send you over the bars - if you’re stupid enough to only use one brake, better it’s the powerful front brake, so he just put the Americans onto that rather than try and explain that both brakes have an effect. Sheldon's whole take on braking is valid it's just not to be taken as dogma or entirely literally. It doesn't apply to everything but it also isn't wrong and doesn't apply to nothing.

People saying it's wrong are often of the 'i just pull both brakes' kind. There's a middleground between 'the rear brake does nothing and is useless and all braking is an emergency stop in a straight line on smooth ground on a road bike' and 'sheldon is wrong and what he said is meaningless'.

People skidding in an emergency stop is also imo a serious issue i watch pro road cycling sometimes and you see them doing it all the time.

That's fixable. Deore T610 or Avid SD5 brakes with any Avid levers, or Magura HS series brakes if you want to go all-in. Oh, and good pads —Koolstop are GOATs.

I would advice against. Of course that most personal preference on bike, but narrower harder saddle is better over long-distances (20+ km, I say) because it wouldn't put more pressure than necessary on your tights.

I was led here after posting in the wrong thread/general. I'm helping a friend who wants a scooter. They're thinking of either a Kymco Super 9, Aprilia SR50, or a Yamaha Aerox post 2011 that has a 2 stroke engine in it. They're also looking for a gilera runner but they're in the Eurozone so I don't know how that would impact trying to look for one (they can't seem to find one in their area). I was able to compare the first two, but to be honest I don't know too much about these types of scooters, so I wanted to see if anyone here had any knowledge on the subject and if they'd be willing to give their second opinion on the matter.

Personally when I lived in a place that got cold weather, I just wore tights together with shorts/bibs appropriate for the kind of riding I'd be done. If was going to be both cold and wet, I'd wear rain pants as an outer layer, though usually just with shorts and not tights since they're pretty good at retaining heat on their own, and you produce a lot of heat from your legs when you ride, so that's one area that doesn't need as much insulation. Absolutely not, unless you're something extreme like doing laps around a track covered in broken glass. Solid tires are tolerable only if their hardness is exactly right for your total bike + rider weight, otherwise they're either unpleasantly squishy or hard and there's nothing you can do to change that. They also produce really terrible braking because the whole tire can spin on the rim if you lock up your wheels, and because they don't deflect like pneumatic tires they're highly prone to skidding.

So, pants are second fiddle to shoes & gloves. You'll think about that when you're actually doing it.
I used to be a commuter in Pittsburgh, and I got miles out of a pair of Shower Pass pants. Some kind of fabric called Artex. The point is, windproof > waterproof when it's cold out (cold air tends to be dry). I would wear a thin wool sweater, but I never paid for wool unders, just used some Champion brand polypropylene longjohns from Target.

A realistic question is: how to patch windproof fabric, once you 'lay it down' and tear a hole in it. Broadly, the answer is 'dyneema repair tape'--it's a double-sided adhesive that's backed with a lightweight layer of dyneema. Lots of places have been out of stock since 2020 though. (Check UL hiking vendors; technically you can make it on your own, but that's another ball of wax.)
Pic is my pair of windproof/waterproof pants (not sure if this company makes them the same in 2022). I also used to have a pair of Craft pants (cross-country skiing) that worked well, but I tore them to bits.

singlespeed conversion is relatively easy and you can (should) spend almost no money to do it.

That being said your shifters are probably not broken, just gummed up with grease and with worn out cables. You can usually flush them out with wd40, re-lube, re-cable, and they work again.

Consider what you want to use the bike for to see if SS is worth it. Don't think of SS as the 'easy' route. Or as the practical route. If you do it cheaply your chain retention won't be amazing so it's not suitable for rough trail riding. The utility also goes down.

You will have to respace the frame dramatically depending on frame, cranks and wheels. Most likely you will have to get the cog as far outboard as you can on the rear, measure this as the chain line will be totally non standard, then adjust the front to match it.

If you have rim brakes and leave them on, truing the wheel is trivial. Simply respace your axle as necessary then fit the wheel. Put a cable tie around the brake lever. Click it, then make adjustments so the brakes don’t rub. Rinse and repeat.

You don't have to dish or respace your wheel. Use a wheel with a cassette hub. This is probably what you have. You can either buy a 'singlespeed kit' which comes with a cog and spacers and cogs scavanged from old cassettes like pic rel.

Freehubs have enough space to get a straight chainline just by moving spacers around. No dishing or re-spacing of your axle required.

If your bike doesn't have a cassette hub, find a cheap used wheel with one to use. The complicated shit you're thinking of is for old threaded freewheel wheels of fixed gear drivetrains.

Nice bike. You need to measure the chain line of the front chainring you want to use first. Then you need to remove the rear wheel, remove the freewheel, thread on your fixed cog (or track cog, they mean the same but different people call them different things) and measure the chain line on that too. Once you’ve done that, report back and we will tell you the easiest thing to adjust to achieve perfect chainline. That’s literally it other than unbolting derailleurs and shifters and removing rear brakes.

If it's just for around-town, a normal chainring is fine. If you're going to rough it up, you want a narrow-wide chainring for chain retention. Also, if your middle chainring is badly worn out, you want a new chainring anyway, and should look for a narrow-wide.

If your middle chainring is good and you use it, you want shorter chainring bolts, so you can remove the outer one. You also have to get a crank puller to remove the inner chainring, because it won't come off without removing the crank.
You also need a chain tool to break/shorten the chain (you should get a new chain). You also need a cassette tool and a chain whip to remove the cassette.

You should also consider servicing the front and rear hubs while you do this which requires 13 &15mm cone spanners and 15&17mm regular spanners.

Because a properly set up fixed gear bike has a chain with almost no slack and a straight chainline - there's no opportunity for the chain to bounce off or be derailed by not engaging with the sprocket/chainring teeth straight on.

I also contemplated selling the bike I ride the most, a Costco Infinity MTB, keeping this as my 'daily' and buying something interesting with the money but I don't think I could get more than the $100 I paid for it now that the pandemic is over

these are a good replacement shifter if you do go that route.
vintage xt/deore thumbies are best but hard to find cheaply now.

you've got integrated brake/shifters but you can just hacksaw off the shifter part and file it smooth and then use those brakes still.

Yeah, the only reason I'm curious about a SS is because when I was bike shopping mid-pandemic a salesperson at a bike shop was really trying to get me into a fixie and as a last resort offered me a Fyxation Pixel with a switchub for $700

That experience almost pushed me away from cycling all together, until my dad's dental hygenist neighbor offered me the Costco bike he got from his boss for whatever I would give him.
