Nah, don't do this. People who take this statement at face value think this means you can rail corners as on dry tarmac, eat shit and then come back here complaining about "studded tyres are more dangerous".
The difference between studded tyres and not on icy surfaces is remarkable and I definitely recommend them to anyone who's riding in freezing temperatures, but they're not magic and they don't mean you can ride like a retard.

On surfaces that consist of packed snow and not ice, like we get here with ploughed paths in the middle of winter, unstudded tyres are fine, but I consider studded tyres essential when the temperatures hover around 0°C in autumn and spring.

about half of the brake levers movement will be basicly dead
3/4 of the way in the brakes start to do something but not much
only the last 1/4 of the levers movement has much effect and its difficult to control
more or less the speed at witch you displace the lever has more effect than its position

then you hit a wooden wall, where you very little mechanical advantage
the brake tends to drag and putting in extra force yields little effect

part of this is the pads stand-off distance
for Cantilevers this is 1.5 mm per pad
for V brake this is 1 mm per pad

The one at the back is the better tyre, you need to follow these steps to bring it back to it's best.

Looking for a mechanical 1x11 drivetrain for commuting/leisure riding.
Must have a granny gear ratio.
I've looked into SRAM Apex 1, but the 40T crankset seems unobtainable.
Shimano ZEE is maybe an option, but it's only got 1x10 and the groupset doesn't have a granny gear.

Also, any reason why Dutch bikes have very little rolling resistance, but regular hybrid bikes have loads?

Upright position riding on the roads, but also cycle paths.

Hybrid step-through which resembles an Omafiets visually, but at present has a very unpleasant 3x7. It uses freewheel gears and the crankset makes noise under high power output.
I've been inspired by seeing Gazelle brand bikes and trying one out - they're somehow much faster than I ever anticipated a hybrid to be. The 8 speed hub gearing was maybe a bit odd, but 1x was surprisingly fun to ride.

I already know about needing to replace the rear wheel, or at the very least, the rear hub.
The thing I find quite annoying is that the UK bicycle market is very much designed towards road bikes and mountain bikes. That's all well and good if you want one, but for anything with practicality in mind, then you're being goaded into an e-bike or some kind of entry level hybrid with cheap components.

will not get you very far unless you know what youre looking for. firstly you should determine the hub spacing because this will you give you a place to start as far as determining the intended size of the wheel. brake mounts can also be a clue

Several years ago I bought a beater Hotpoint oven for $30. I keep it in the garage, use it for powder coat, heating parts pre-weld, etc. Very convenient. Only other things I've bought are xtra racks from ReStore, and a digital temperature probe.
Not my clip, but it's where I got the idea.

My "new" frame can fit 27.5" wheels, should I get them instead of 26"s? Also, since I've only ever had tires narrower than 1.5" (only ever had road bikes), how do tires wider than 2.1" feel? First of all measure your dropout spacing. If it is a vintage 7 speed they might only measure 126mm then you need to cold-set them to 130mm and align the dropouts.
Regarding noises, check if your crank has any loose screws or has any play.
Rolling resistance is only impacted by the roundness of your wheels and the tires that you put on them. Drivetrains should be roughly similiar in efficiency if set up correctly and maintained well. If one bike does not perform as well it most likely is not kept in the right condition.

it takes a specialist shop to weld titanium. $50 buys you the cheapest , easiest weld for steel at my local welder. it's definitely going to cost more than $50. maybe a local framebuilder will take pity on you, but it's still going to cost more than $50

Cleaning up an older road bike with a 6 speed thread on freewheel and its wheels are cooked.
Have front width of 100mm and rear of 127.5mm between the dropouts.
I see these on amazon and expect the tires to be awful and I can replace those with nicer ones but the rims are the right size and width seems to check out. The price is right, how awful can they be?

is this Fuji Newest worth 400 bucks?
according to MP photos (as seller didn't posted specs):
- Cannondale C2 handlebar
- Fuji stem
- Shimano Tiagra shifters
- Front derailleur: Shimano tiagra
- Crankset: FSA Valero
- Wheelset: Fulcrum Racing 5.5 (but idk tbqh)

depends on condition. Maybe 350 if it's mint. Those shit stock pedals are a good sign it hasn't been ridden much (though possibly just swapped to sell it). If the tires have cuts or well worn tread or the brake tracks are much worn or the wheels are out of true or the bearings are out or the chain is stretched or the braking/shifting isn't good and it needs re-cabling i'd want to pay a LOT less.
Also it's fucking tiny. Are you smol?

Back when I lived in a place that got winter but snow/ice rarely stuck around for long, I found that studded tires were great the two weeks out of the year when there was lots of ice on the pavement for them to bite into - it was easier to ride on sheets of ice with my Nokians than to try and walk across the same ice. If all variables are the same, suspension would be more stable and have more traction than rigid on rough surfaces and higher speeds, geometry will change under different riding dynamics as well. On rigid you save significant weight over suspension while relying solely on the tires to do all the terrain articulation for you, and the geometry does not change ever. This is ideal for smoother surfaces like roads and maintained dirt paths and is considered a more commuter-friendly setup

But they're not.

If they truly were, then the bike without suspension would be faster on a smooth surface. But we can't tell you how much faster. There's just no way to know.
But again, more importantly, all the variables aren't the same. What type of hybrid are we talking? Body position is hugely important when talking about power output and speed. A really upright comfort hybrid just isn't going to let someone use the same muscles and put out as much power as a more aggressively-positioned XC bike will. Plus you'll encounter more air resistance since your body is more upright. And what type of mountain bike are we talking about as well? I know you said dual suspension, but that can mean anything from a short-travel XC bike to a huge downhill bike. There's just not enough info anon. It's not a simple question.

you can trust the rest. Titanium has to be welded in argon not air and welders only have an argon tank of a certain size, they don't all have an argon room. If a weld on a ti frame breaks in one places that's the place that didn't fit inside the argon tank, so you know the other side of the frame is good.

The best way would be to try all options and decide for yourself which ones suit you best. No, take as long as you care, start & stop, etc. But you have to flood the thing with shield gas a bit before, all during, and a bit after you run the torch, and that gas isn't free. And the longer you take, there are more opportunities for your surface prep to be ruined/contaminated.

This is why the frame is held in a stand or fixture.

This might be a dumb question but what kind of jump in tire width and height over the rim would I expect going from 25mm to 28mm tires.
It looks like I got enough clearance on the existing 25s to go up one size as far as the frame and fork go but the distance between the outside tire tread and the top of my brake calipers is maybe about 8mm and I am worried about them rubbing.

FX 2 is better in that it has cassette instead of freewheel (more reliable), but the alloy fork (instead of steel fork in FX 1) is probably lighter but less comfortable to ride with. FX 2 has Tourney front derailleur, so you aren't getting away from "lol Tourney trash" completely. A Trek FX w/ stock tires is totally fine to ride on unpaved roads. You may want to look at similar models like Marin Fairfax or Specialized Sirrus (they all suffer from Tourney components creeping into higher-level trims).

Also, tire widths are mere suggestions by the manufacturer, one brand's 25 might be close to another manufacturer's 28, or 6mm apart.

My old bike didn't have holes big enough for the recessed mount and I didn't want to drill em bigger. I found a set of nutted dual pivot brakes that fit and they stop much better then the old ones. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B099RZ151X

New shimano road refills are very good. Most LBS sell them very cheap becuase they're bulk workshop supplies. Use whatever holder.

I also think the power is ok as long as the setup isn't too aggressive. IE you have to actually be comfortable in the drops because there you get way more leverage.

I'm looking for a 700c/29" rear wheel that's got a freehub for 10/11 speed cassettes, but with wide tyre compatibility.
This is for upgrading a cheaper hybrid bike from a crappy freewheel drivetrain to either a Shimano Hollowtech based groupset or possibly a SRAM GXP groupset depending on availability & cost. The only issue is that the ones I find online are almost all designed for disc brakes, unless they're 130mm OLD. I need 135 OLD.
The closest thing I can find is Mavic Crossride UB, but those are only available as 26".

I've contemplated just replacing the hub, but Shimano too seems to be a bit funky here.
If upgrade isn't possible due to this strange rim brake 29" wheel design, then I'm contemplating just selling the darn thing.

A 19mm internal rim will fit up to a 42mm tire just fine, or more. Most -road bike- rims will be that wide now so compatibility isn't really>>1838470

You know anon you probably have seen posts on here saying 'dont buy a hybrid with a freewheel'
'dont buy 7 speed'
'dont buy tourney'

The main reason I say that is it's a signifier of an all-round extremely low quality bike.
There actually isn't anything that bad about tourney itself, or freewheels. New shimano freewheels have the same ramped hyperglide design on the cogs that gives good shifting. One thing against freewheel wheels is the axles can bend and single wall rims can go out of true but if your bike is just 'cheap' but it hasn't actually brocken in major ways for being cheap then none of those downsides are even real for you.

When you're in a gear and riding in that gear having a 'better' groupset will mean nothing and it is possible to setup even the lowest end drivetrains to shift well.

It is absolutely not worth upgrading but you CAN improve your bike and learn stuff in a better way and not waste money. If you want something catagorically better get something catagorically better whether it's an old project or a new bike. Don't misinterpret advice about where to start to think you should circle back and go there by throwing money at it because you shouldn't.

yesterday by absolute chance I tried to sit more forward on the saddle of my spin bike, thought I was sitting on the nose, could barely tell where my sit bones were, all I know is there was no pain on the sit bones and I my dick and balls didn't go numb at all, the only numbness I had was sort of on the butt crack and it lasted like 20 seconds when I got down, I'm quite overweight and tried every kind of saddle, made me think that the biggest part of the problem is my weight at the moment, I fixed saddle height and all, plus sitting more forward was a big step too, when I got off my bike after 90 minutes fully seated I turned on a video of my fav pornstar, took me nothing to get hard and cum like a mad lad

picrel is my bike, I ride with my back almost perfectly erect because I lift twice a week with high volume and I've found that if weight shifts on my shoulders then my lifting will suffer, plus it's not a comfortable feeling and takes away a good chunk of the pleasure of riding...I like the position but I'd like the handlebar to be a tad higher and closer, but picrel is as far as it goes, which is bearable

that being said I've been riding for 3 weeks, went from 30 mins with no resistance to 90 mins with a fair bit of resistance at 20km/h average speed, I can definitely see myself going up to 3 rides per week of 120mins with 2 lifting days and 2 rest days

plus I'm on keto, which solved like 75% of my health problems, even though I call it "athlete keto", I played hours and hours of ball as a teen too, so I know a lot about fitness in general

pic related is the bike and saddle, which is a martin touring large gel from Selle SMP, the bike weighs 58kgs, the flywheel is 24kgs with a felt pad on top as resistance(properly lubed with WD-40 Siliconical lube)

There might be your problem. you are basically leaving all your bust weight on your ass while your arms are not sharing any of the load.
The fact that you are using low resistance is another factor. The more power you pedal with, the less weight is on your butt (thats why sprinters raise from the saddle when releasing those 1kw peak powers)
Raise your seat to the max you can pedal and lower your handlebar like a lot. Ideally the handlebar should be 5 -10 cm above the seat height. now it looks too high.

I've found that the saddles with the hole are great for us fat fucks, the only hole saddle I've found for us fat fucks is the Selle SMP Martin Touring Gel, wish someone told me how expensive saddles were, thank goodness for Amazon and free returns, I've tried another two before this one, respectively the SMP TRK Medium and the SMP TRK Large, my guess is the more upright you sit, the more padding and width you need

If these boutique hubs are out of your budget I recommend you buy some used 26" 90s shimano wheel (xt, lx or the like), get some 29er rims (iwth same spoke count..) and lace that thing up yourself.

All I desired was an inexpensive bicycle that'd get me into cycling. The threads on my threaded forks are trashed. I'd like to save these forks if possible.

I have a 1" Threadless headset in the mail, and I was told I can just use a clamp style stem on top of the threads to lock the forks in.

i use isopropyl alcohol on the rotors and sometimes the pads too, but they always end up squeaky again within a week. should i try specific brake cleaner products? clean more frequently? my pads are semi-metallic. maybe i should switch back to resin after they wear out?

that's a nice looking bike. imo it doesn't make sense to try to make it ride like a hardtail. just lower the tire pressure when you are riding singletrack.
as far as frame protection goes, it looks like it comes with some kind of protector on the chainstay. that's really the only place my bikes get dinged up. wipe it down with a towel if it gets wet and store it inside. and don't sweat it if your paint does get small scratches, it's inevitable if you actually ride it.

I think what you described is possible, but not advised because the threaded steerer tube could break at the bottom of the threadless stem. Because with a threadless stem you're levering on the steerer tube, and the steerer tube has a reduced diameter at the root of the threads. (With a typical threaded setup, the steerer tube is not exposed, and you're levering on the vertical part of the stem.)

There are several ways to fix, but none of them are typical bike shop things. You can have the threads filled in with bronze & recut (pic). This should be the simplest, and cheapest option.

But realistically, you can probably get a China/Taiwan fork for about the same cost, it just won't match your paint or style exactly.

You could also have the steerer cut & graft a good threaded section on. Same procedure as extending a threaded fork steerer tube, but you would be adding zero length. This is more complicated, adds weight, and can interfere with the quill stem wedge if not done right.

Yea, that's exactly the cause of the damaged. Top nut was never tightened fully. I built the bike but didn't have the proper spanners and simply hand tightened it. Rode it a bit too much like that I suppose. I caused the damage and I'm unhappy about it.

I will likely get a new fork. Can you help me with options/styles? The bike is a 1994 Raleigh r40? (Or something).
I'd assume I need to research how to measure my fork so I get a similar replacement.

For a replacement, there are three numbers to measure: steerer length, axle-crown distance, and rake. Ideally the new fork would match all three.

Measurements 1 and 2 are straightforward.
Steerer length (1) is distance from the top of the fork crown to the end of the steerer tube. In practice, measure from the bottom of the bearing race that's installed on the steerer. The diagram originally showed head tube length, but I drew the steerer measurement in green.

Axle-crown (2) is from the center of the fork end/axle location to top of the fork crown/underside of steerer bearing race.

Fork rake (3) is trickier, pic is one way to do it. Another is have the fork flat on a surface and butt the fork tips against a 90 degree surface. Mark A, then sight down the steerer and mark B. Imagine laying the fork on your kitchen counter, and using a marker to write A on the wall, then looking down through the tube and marking B, then measuring your marks on the wall to do A minus B.

For a style match, I'm sure you can get suggestions if you post a few pics of your current fork (one from the front, one from the side). Probably your country, too.
If you have a bike co-op near you, I'd check there first. I've picked up replacement forks at my local for dirt cheap. Measurements weren't exact, but they were close enough.

Not all hope is lost.

What you should do is install the top part of the threadless headset, and set the preload/ clamp it with two threaded lockrings tightened against one another, and a spacer below them to take up the stripped threads. There are enough good threads to do that and it's not dangerous. Then you continue to use a quill stem.

It may be a little difficult to find threaded lockrings that are thin enough to fit two, and for the bottom one to not have that lip on it that means it can't go down fully, but they exist. A bike shop probably has a bin of loose crap you could sift through and find them. It also will be a little difficult to find a 1" spacer but those also do exist.

the real solution here is not to find a new fork, but to find a new frameset. That's a cheap frame. If you're happy with beat up paint you can aquire a project with high spec tubing for cheap and transfer all your nice parts over.

no, it's not -that- shitty. Any steel frame with an integrated hanger is passably ok, but something welded from that era, with that low end sis mech, plastic shifter, crank, that i'm assuming are original, it's plaingauge cromo at best, it's low end. You can do better.

I know you've been on a journey with this bike and i respect that but at this point with the fork toast it makes absolute sense to upgrade the frame. All the nice parts you put on there will transfer over.

If you've already bought the headset, imo bodge the fix like i desribed with 2 lockrings, and then just bide your time until the right mid-high end frame or fucked complete bike comes around for cheap and with paint you like.

A sirrus is not for going fast, but going fast is mostly up to the riders legs. If the cassette is worn it needs to be replaced, but otherwise replacing the cassette will not make you faster. You might put a bigger chain ring on it but I really don't think it's worth it.
My suggestion would be to do what maintenance is needed to keep the bike in good working order, ride the thing until you're stronk and then get a proper road bike.

Buy a new chain. Remove your cassette and clean it. Remove your jockey wheels, take them apart and clean them.
Service your wheel bearings.

Cassette doesn't make you go fast, but learning how to shift might. You already have plenty of gears to go as fast as you ever will on a hybrid. A bike shop will probably check your chain wear for free just for the chance of trying to sell you a new one, or if you're already set on buying a new cassette too you can let it rock until it starts skipping when you mash and then replace both.

this is the measure that most frame manufacturers use as "frame size"

GC performance on youtube often has to catch the handlebar from swinging in his parking lot videos. is it not acceptable to put the front wheel in? in normal use (not displaying the bike in a store) it feels more natural to put the front wheel in and holding the handlebars to line up the front wheel with the stand and it feels more natural to have the front wheel "hooked" onto the stand so that the bike is leaning up instead of leaning down toward the ground.

If that is your saddle height, that bike is too big. Rules of thumb:

Also, there are online calculators that tell you your frame height (measured from center bottom bracked to end of seat tube) based on your height and inseam, but that's a first clue at best.

There's a pattern called 2x or "two cross". Even if you have a hub/rim that lends itself to a different pattern (3x, etc), you can lace it 2x. I wouldn't worry about it.

On August 1st I posted in /bqg/ about not being able to shift into my 2nd highest cog (13t) on a 12-25 9spd Microshift cassette (>>1833645 thread is Archived).
I suspected a tiny burr on the back of the 13t cog (near the center hole), so I flattened it using some black sandpaper & a glass plate. I also tried refitting the cogs, giving extra attention that they weren't slightly misaligned. And... I still had the issue.

But now it was obvious that the 12t cog was the offender. Once every cassette revolution, two teeth were catching on the chain (Sram PC-971) and lifting it a bit. These are twisted/profiled teeth. Not sure if they're out of spec, bent or what.
The solution? Remove the 12t cog, toss it in the recycling. So now it's a 13-25 8spd cassette. Adjusted my H limit screw and... friction shifting just works.

And yes, the 13t cog doesn't have the tiny notches to mate w/ the lockring. Not sure if that was going to be an issue, so I did a short test ride. I live at the top of 7% hill, so big ring-top gear going down the thing, little ring-low gear coming up. No problems, lockring didn't immediately loosen, etc. Then I went on a ~25 mile ride around the city, again no problems.

Hyperglide freehubs are generally limited to 11t, but of course there are exceptions.
All of the big companies make <11t cogs for different freehub drivers: Sram (XD), Shimano (MicroSpline), Campagnolo (N3W), and smaller companies too.

Sorry if I got the wrong general. I haven't been on /n/ since it used to be /o/. I'm helping a friend who wants a scooter. They're thinking of either a Kymco Super 9, Aprilia SR50, or a Yamaha Aerox post 2011 that has a 2 stroke engine in it. They're also looking for a gilera runner but they're in the Eurozone so I don't know how that would impact trying to look for one (they can't seem to find one in their area). I was able to compare the first two, but to be honest I don't know too much about these types of scooters, so I wanted to see if anyone here had any knowledge on the subject and if they'd be willing to give their second opinion on the matter.

Depending on which you buy they can be plenty tiny enough to carry just about anywhere. Just don't buy chinkshit and be warned that that mount doesn't come in the box and is going to cost an extra $20+.

what would happen if one took a race style road bike on some mild mountain bike terrain. like with some roots, medium size rocks/pebbles, stuff like that. Would it just be uncomfortable or could riding that damage the bike?

It might damage the bike, but that can be pretty dependent on the rider and how smooth they are as well. It would also suck because you're not going to get much traction at all.

This is just "underbiking" and whether you'll do any damage depends on your skills and condition of the bike. If the wheels aren't true and tensioned now, or you have a loose headset or other fittings not adjusted correctly, then rough terrain will make those issues worsen more quickly. And if you smash low volume tires into a rock you may do physical damage to the rim (and probably pinch flat your rim in the process). Ultimately it depends on you: if you have the skill for it you can ride a road racing bike on gnarly trails without any ill effects, it just won't be a comfortable and you'll typically need to go slower and more cautiously than you would on a bike meant for that kind of use.
