>>1861830yep, it's been brought back because
- not everyone rides on mountains
- "mountain bike" has sort of developed into its own, very different thing that is a far cry from the multi-use rigid bikes of the 80s and 90s
it's a way to distinguish like, rigid bikes built for exploration from fully sick slopestyle or downhill bro stuff
>>1861933yeah i ride a midnight special which i would consider an "all-road" bike if i had to put a label on it. it's really just tyre clearance without the slacker geometry people tend to associate with gravel. to phrase it the other way, it has big cushiony tyres but quick snappy geometry. of course it rides gravel just fine, i prefer the feeling of it to the giant gravel bike i've ridden.
"all-road" is my favourite type of bike because i mostly do road riding but like to take unpaved detours and stuff. i keep it with slick 650bx48 tyres, which is a real comfortable sweet spot. it's the most fun i've ever had with a bike honestly
i think depending on the person using them, all these categories can either be a good way to tell how the bike feels, or it can be a way to convince idiots to buy more and more bikes
