Take a trip to Montréal sometime, OP. The Montréal Metro makes the TTC subway and SkyLink elevated rail seem as outdated as the Glasgow ring subway.

Granted, in comparison to the Paris Metro or London Underground it is pretty small as it hasn't had significant expansion, it is hands down the best subway system in North America. NYC is big and everything but extremely slow. Toronto only has 3 proper lines and it runs okay, but the some platforms are extremely small.

Montréal has great frequency, goes quite fast, is very silent (rubber wheels like the Paris Metro), impeccably lean and well integrated with other transit. The stations are absolutely lovely as well featuring beautiful modernist architecture too, f

native Montrealer here, the metro is decent but I would like to add some negatives if I may:
-Frequency has gone to shit post-covid
-Aggressive panhandlers
-The architectural variety is nice but it increases the cost of building new stations
-Rubber tires makes tunneling the only option, another obstacle to expansion.
-Between 1988 and 2023 only 3 new stations have been opened. An average of <1 new stations per decade.
-Limited commuter rail service, only useful during rush hour.
Thankfully the REM will save Montreal's transit system but of course nimbys had to kill the entire eastern portion of the project

If you want a rail system that's loaded with history and beauty yet still fast and modern, go to London. If you want to wait an hour to sit in fentanyl fumes while listening to the latest mumble rap or insane rant (or both at the same time), go to Seattle and ride Sound Transit buses.
