for less money, same recommendation but buy used. many local markets will have good stuff for $300(iknowhatigot) or 100 (I want this bike out of my house)
for used, getting a *rigid* 90s MTB and putting slick tires on it makes a good all'rounder bike. don't buy suspension, , especially used. there are a variety of reasons why, none of which I feel like typing out right now.
BUT you need to figure out what size frame is correct for your body and buy based on that. you *will* see a perfect used bike but it will be the wrong size.
