I saw them running an empty passenger train on the new brightline track heading east out of orlando late one night about a week ago, they were fucking booking it too, easily overtaking traffic on 598. they go 120+ along that stretch since there's no crossings I think.

Not really. It's very slow. It takes 3.5 hours to get from Miami to Orlando, so you might as well just drive. By the time you get transportation to downtown Miami's train station, and transportation from the Orlando terminal, you're better off just to drive. I guess it's okay for non-locals or people without cars.

I'm not really convinced yet but to fair to brightline I have no clue what tix will go for. They're gonna have to be real creative with their station location because it will mostly handle tourists (my 2 cents) and the amtrak station in downtown Tampa is in a shit location. My guess is fleet commonality, which is a big advantage for Amtrak. And Seimens probably views the US as an emerging market for their products, whereas domestic locomotive producers see Amtrak/passenger service as a niche market not worth competing heavily for.

Are the passenger cars also licensed by Seimens? If so, that's a big advantage that EMD/Wabtec couldn't offer in the first place.

Are you retarded? There is plenty of small towns and cities that have a simple Streetcar system and Train system as well despite having less than 100k of population overall. It's cheap as fuck and easy to build. Also 80mph only exists on older tracks in America due to America not keeping up with it's infrastructure due to Car Centric spending. While on normal tracks today it can go 120mph on Brightline in Florida. But in France and in other good transit places they can go 170mph pretty easily. I hate America as much as anyone else does, but you can't really hate on their freight industry. It's true some privately owned short line railroad tracks in the middle of the extreme rural areas of the USA have really warped track and even better areas have issues, but overall it is good because of the sheer amount of tracks out there and the great competition between major freight companies like Union Pacific or Norfolk Southern. No train network in the world besides Russia, China and India can compare to the sheer large scale and economic size of the US freight industry. The mainlines in the US see trains 24-7-365 carrying massive trains of intermodals, tankers, grainers etc and they do it very efficiently.

All these videos you're posting are clearly just short line spur lines where speed doesn't really matter. Doesn't matter whether you're in Europe or Japan, they don't have 80km/h trains on spur lines or branches either and quite often the track is pretty fucked up as well. Earlier this year, Minnesota greenlit a regional rail upgrade between Duluth and the Twin Cities. The intention is that the rail line in question will retain its mixed-use status, as the state intends to operate a passenger line between both metropolitan areas. The project in question is essentially beefing up an existing rail line to allow for passenger rail to run around 80-90mph, as well as purchasing rolling stock.
Some people feel it'll be a huge blunder, since the volume of riders is still a relative unknown. Others point to improved freight movement as a positive.
What does /n/ think? Good move or dumb as shit urbanist pandering?

I think that's below the norm in the rest of the developed world.
It shouldn't be a huge deal, and there is something else wrong if such a project bring the state to financial trouble.

Honestly it can be better. But sadly 90mph is better sadly 97% of American Rail Lines. So it's a small victory. If they could get 120mph or 130mph at the very least i would be happier. As for ridership as long as they place them in spots people want to go to and it has 4-5 trains and frequent transit and free for awhile it will work out huge time.

This. Management is shortsighted and sees maintenance and crews as unnecessary expenses to be eliminated. They didn't even try to work out intermodal, they just handed over shitloads of market share to long haul truckers because keeping an actual schedule was too hard. The people who claim USA is #1 for freight rail are blinded by the tonnage moved (mostly ore/oil) and the length of the trains.

Every time an Amtrak train is delayed because of a freight derailment or has to wait for a freight train too big for the sidings, fine them for a percent of their quarterly revenue, which goes directly to Amtrak's budget. In addition, force them to pay compensation to all passengers on the delayed train, with amounts increasing the longer the delay was. Similar to EU261. They'll learn to play ball real quick.

recently took the adirondock from montreal to nyp and back :)

There are several reasons. Siemens has a lot of plants already in the US and have been proven to be reliable and are able to deliver a product relatively on time. Second is Amtrak wants fleet standardization, it is way easier and cheaper to maintain a fleet when everything is the same basic model.

I think Amtrak's problem is focusing on long-distance routes. The idea is that you can be dropping off and picking up people along the way, but many of those routes run through the middle of nowhere, making that advantage moot. Planning to do DC - Chicago - San Fransisco (Emeryville) - Seattle - Chicago - DC, and will likely be spending 1 or 2 days in San Fransisco and another day or two in Seattle.

I'm pretty sure I can do the DC - Chicago and Chicago - DC legs without wasting a night in a hotel in chicago. As the Capitol Limited gets into Chicago at around 9am and the California Zypher doesn't leave Chicago until around 4pm.

My concern is on the way back on the Empire Builder, it's scheduled to get into Chicago around 5pm, and the Capitol limited back to DC doesn't depart until 6:40 pm, but that only leaves a little over an hour of buffer room where if the Empire Builder is running late i'll miss my final connection and have to spend the night in Chicago.

Should I just assume I'll miss the connection in Chicago at the end and book a hotel room in advance or roll the dice and hope I can make the connection?

Most states can't, which is why I think any kind of intercity HSR would need to be a federal initiative. Even the Fed DOT isn't great at it, we've been building roads for so long we've forgotten how to do much else, but at least the Fed can fund things on a scale no state DOT can match and set requirements to ensure that separate new lines like this can all eventually inter-operate.

It requires the cooperation of 2 states, 1 province, and 2 federal governments.
Ideally we'd get both federal governments to come together and agree this needs to happen for the benefit of the entire region, agree on federal funding splits between the two nations, and then work on the finer state/province level details once the groundwork for building the damn thing is ironed out at the federal level.

Not really ideal when it's supposed to be a high-speed rail service that crosses the border, you need to figure out passport/citizenship shit either before you board for all passengers or have some sort of station stop at the border for immigration processing.

It really is better to have both countries involved from the start.

That's a solved problem. We already have immigration pre-clearance in Canada for flights going to the US, they arrive as if they were domestic flights. To my knowledge Canada doesn't have the reverse, but I doubt that would be difficult to set up. Easiest would be a Schengen-like system.

But all that aside, I wasn't talking about immigration/passport control, I was speaking solely on the particulars of the system itself. Gauges, electrification specifics, signaling systems, and so on. All of that has been the biggest issue with railway interoperability in Europe, not the border crossing part.

The US and Canada have both been on standard gauge for like 150 years.

Similarly for signaling and electrical systems, while they might not always match up perfectly, they've been aware of each other for long enough that both systems more or less are designed to operate with the other. Both systems have mostly settled on 480V HEPs, though with different wiring, they can still be used on each other's systems with adapters.

Japan's mini-shinkansen lines are a good example, despite being re-gauged to standard the rolling stock used on them is narrower and shorter to fit into the legacy stations and curves. My bet is the latter though.

That's what CAHSR is doing too with the Central Valley segment, but they're still planning to use existing CalTrain track and stations in SanFran IIRC. In such a case, you'd have to account for those limitations.

I don't know, look at CAHSR. But the problem with upgrading is that unless it's the NEC or a handful of other passenger-owned lines, you're always going to be beholden to the freight railroad and you're always going to have to work passenger trains around increasingly longer slow freights. I would prefer new alignments, but with public funding there's not a way to control costs. Everyone involved will be on the take.

Any train that can run in the US can run in Canada and vice-versa. They're nearly identical systems. Canadian Pacific and Canadian National both operate substantial trackage in the US, CN goes down to New Orleans and CP can reach Mexico City with their recent acquisition of KCS.

If you're talking about making a museum piece, you're looking at buying it kinda clean, draining of it if every fluid, and then transporting it. It's not cheap, but the cost is finding a home for it and getting it there, which is nearly impossible

I've done various rail car restoration (1880s to about 1960s) projects and even the "simple" ones end up costing an arm and a leg. Storage and transportation isn't cheap either, and god forbid you need to restore the interior of a furnished car. Reupholstering seats, redoing decorative woodwork, etc, etc. Even if you can get parts cheap the labor adds up, even with volunteer labor as some things can't be trusted to volunteers no matter how willing they are to donate their time.

I'm still having a headache over getting a pair of trucks refurbished at somewhere around $75,000 each.

I digress, but suffice it to say, it's not just storage and transit unless you get a car in mint condition (basically doesn't happen).

This problem was already solved by the PRR over a century ago with the creation of North Philadelphia station. HSR on the Keystone would necessarily mean utilizing North Philadelphia station and skipping 30th Street. The problem is it's smack in the middle of the Philly Badlands, a collection of the city's most blighted, crime-ridden neighborhoods. As a result the station unironically has the lowest ridership of any Amtrak station in PA and is in an awful state of repair.

That being said it's not like the station is poorly situated in regard to transit, quite the opposite actually. It's basically the second nexus for where the old Reading and PRR trunks used by SEPTA regional rail cross, and it has immediate access to the Broad Street subway.

It's not unimaginable that in the future this area becomes gentrified and redeveloped. I think there's already been proposals to turn the station itself into a massive mixed-use TOD for a couple years now, but I can't seem to find much more info beyond the holdings company is still looking for an investor.

It's ~1300 miles from NYC to Miami, that would require a maximum operating speed of 200-220mph with only stopping at major stations, and averaging at least 165mph over the total distance to make it an 8-hour trip.

And it would cost ~$150-200 billion to build in the first place, maybe more. Even if you had 5 million passengers a year, and you were profiting (after operating expenses and upkeep costs and overhead are factored in) $10 per passenger, it would take you ~40 years to recoup the initial investment. And you would likely need to invest billions more during that time to replace your rolling stock and do other upgrades over time.

And no politician wants to fund a $200B+ mega project that wont see public use for ~10+ years and won't see greater regional effects for potentially 20-30 years.

So would real HSR down the entire east coast be great? Sure, it might even be able to rival air travel if you aren't trying to turn a profit on it. I just don't see how you get the political will and funding to make it happen.

Alcohol and food is available on the train as well as wifi and power outlets. If you're on a longer route the food is actually decent, burgers, steak, salmon, etc.

If direct service is your goal, yeah then flight makes more sense. A FL-NYC train makes sense for someone going from Florida to the Carolinas, New York to Virginia, or any other intermediate stops along the way.

An HSR train should only be in service for 8
to 12 hours every day. I highly doubt there will be Miami-NYC service that fast in my lifetime.
