With proper maintenance and upgrading old bridges and infrastructure can be kept up to modern standards.
The problem is American railroads have been cutting maintenance of infrastructure to the bone so these bridges end up collapsing.

American railroad bridges can be scary with exposed ribar, chunks of concrete falling off, rust everywhere, etc. Railroads skimp as much as possible on maintenance.
