How do you carry big loads on a bicycle WITHOUT spending thousands on a cargo bike or trailer?

Trailers are like 100 to 200 bucks, potentially cheaper if you're crafty and can cobble something together from spares and other stuff. Plenty of no-weld trailer building instructions on the net as well.

Trailers are only around $100-200. It's clearly the best option.
For smaller everyday stuff you can use baskets and panniers.

And another easily 300# (136KG) guy carrying a huge trash bag full of cans pedaling just about as slowly as to maintain forward motion.

That town is full of weirdo’s but it’s a mecca of utilitarian bicycling
