Can anyone in California tell me the fastest way to travel from the San Joaquin valley to Berkeley? I don't want to live in the bay area cause I don't want my ass eaten by to cost of living but still want to work and go to school there. I know Modesto and Stockton are both prime places for commuting, but if you have other locations please tell.
Advice?

This, nowhere within reasonable transit range of Berkeley is going to be cheap, and even the places 3 hours drive away cost far more than they should for what you get. Either accept that you will be paying a minimum of $1500/mo for a room in a shared house (1.5-2x that minimum for an apartment) or look for employment/education elsewhere.

As of now there's not an easy way to do it. Stockton is a hellhole, but you can take the ACE train and transfer to BART in Livermore, I believe. Richmond Amtrak Station on the San Joaquins line also has a BART connect, so you could get there from the valley. Realistically, it's a fucking hassle. The ACE train is supposed to expand soon. We'll see.

Thanks, looks like the only two options are take the Amtrak around Mt. Diabolic or take the BART in Dublin. However, it also looks like I could just stay in Modesto and drive instead since it'll take the same time and be cheaper anyways. Oh, well.

I mean, if you're truly determined to work or study in the Bay that is an option if you can fly cheaply. It's still not recommended though, literally anywhere outside Manhattan is a cheaper, better, less degenerated place to live and work than the SF Bay Area.

Dude, just bite the bullet and find an apartment in the east bay. You can find affordable housing from private landlords if you look hard enough.
It's not worth doing all these gymnastics to waste dozens of hours a week commuting to save a couple hundred bucks. It ESPECIALLY doesn't make sense to commute if you want any semblance of a social life in college. You won't care about the money in 5 years, but wasted time you're never getting back.

Yes, but you don't need to take a high speed train to another shitty Central Valley city to access any of that. I mean will to go places people want to travel for work or leisure, and the answer to that is a resounding NO, even if the full SF-LA network is built (which is even less likely than the Merced to Bakersfield route that's already billions over budget and decades behind schedule)
