4468 Mallard

No.1927237 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
Happy Mallard Day, everyone! On this day, eighty-five years ago, the world speed record for a steam locomotive of 126mph / 203kph was reached by this blue beauty, which stands to this day.

(others claim to have made it to higher speeds, and they may be right - but, similar to the Guinness World Records, if it's not authenticated, it sadly doesn't count.)

She's long retired now, of course, but you can go and see her at the National Railway Museum in York if you like; or there's always Wikipedia if you're unable:

...and there's a small marker commemorating the record on the East Coast Main Line between Grantham and Peterborough, which can be glimpsed as your modern train zooms past.
