Insurance and road tax are BB. But needing some kind of license to drive a (partly) motorized vehicle on the street is fair. I'd do it like this: if you already have a regular license you can just get it and if you don't you have to do a quick crash-course on road signs and laws.

I'd also limit the speeds at which the motor runs even further. In Germany it's 25kph, I'd take it down to a maximum of 20kph. I see way to many children and elderly riding for who the bike is clearly to fast and heavy to control.

Sure the average person *could* reach 30kph. But this isn't a speed people (young and old) ride at when in a city. 95% of ebike owners probably wouldn't even notice if you limit them to 20kph.

It is solving itself. At least over here in germany.
A large manufacturer of e-bikes is going insolvent and since they provide the server infrastructure for their e-bikes this means... the e-bikes will be virtually useless afterwards.

They need a fucking PHONE APP to control things like light and speed or even simple things like unlocking the bike when you walk near it.
Furthermore most of the parts for the bikes are specifically made by the manufacturer so you cant just replace broken parts.

This is basically what the bike would be if it was invented under todays circumstances.

Like I said I barely see them and have never seen one actually being ridden. So I have no clue what type of person owns them but your description seems fairly accurate. The type of person who raves about IoT, Industry 4.0 and Blockchains would be pretty likely to buy a bike which is unusable without internet and a phone. 25 km/h is only a problem if they're riding on sidewalks. And so would be 20 km/h also. The real solution is up the limit to 30 km/h and lower the limit on roads in built up areas to 30 km/h as well. Force the bikes onto the same roads with cars in city centers. It's a non issue when the limit is something that e-bikes can reach.

In Germany most roads in residential areas are already 30kmh and most larger roads in citys with a 50kmh limit have bike paths so it would work. The only problem is that loads of people would continue riding on sidewalks.

You'd just need a big public awareness campaign with police actively fining people riding on sidewalks for a while to fix that. 30 km/h e-bikes sharing the road in city centers with cars is the obvious solution but cagiebrained people are too blind to see it. It also solves space problems in old city centers since you don't need separate bike paths or lanes. In the areas you have space you can make bike paths and up the speed limit.

I really doubt this would have a large enough effect on the cyclists themselves. Better to rile up pedestrians to fuck with cyclists on sidewalks. The fines would only work if there are enough police hanging around to enforce the rules and I think they don't have enough man power to do this.

I think a lot of bikes in the last year have been designed around this seat battery. Even going into the actual stores that sell these things and have this brand name on the front of the store, they will have a dozen or so very similar bikes with different brand names all made by the same company.

My parents own three. I took one out for a spin the last time I visited and they're the biggest pieces of shit you'll ever ride. Automatic gear shifting is terrible and doesn't choose correctly, they feel plasticky and clunky, electric assist isn't even that good and the public e-bikes are way better. The app blows as well and the locking system is totally defective. Terrible product - I'm happily sticking with my leg-powered gravel bike.

you know the meme about how if you ask a random person to draw a bike, they can't draw it anywhere near accurately enough for it to work as a a real bike? road bikes are literally blanked out of many people's consciousness, they just have some very very vague knowledge of lance armstrong and his doping, there are huge chunks of the european population that have never truly paid attention to a road bike, they see it as something intimidating that's not remotely for them, like a sports motorcycle, or they might have walked past a road bike in a thrift shop but never got "hooked", just like how you don't know the ins and outs of louis vuitton handbags, or how some roasties can't tell the difference between a ferrari and a lamborghini, or how you don't know anything about curling or the biathlon (a winter sport that combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting).

I hit one at 25mph after he rode into my 2003 Corolla (I got the video on CCTV...witness + he said I ran the light but the CCTV shows he ran a solid red without even turning his head and looking for oncoming traffic).

He made zero effort to even stop and rode into my front driver's quarter panel at a steady 20mph...by the time I saw him I locked my brakes (he literally saw me when he was 5 feet from hitting).

I had to pay $2000 to fix my Corolla out of pocket (roof was caved in, windshield broken) and I replaced it with a lifted 2011 Pathfinder with a dash cam to avoid that ever happening again (he's going under this time)

I only know one person in my life that hates ebikes and thats my dad, who cant keep pace with me while I ride my fixed gear. Some ebike users overtook us on a climb that we both couldnt ride and he got pissed. He usually drives his car everywhere and avidly avoids walking, even if that means parking on pavement, cycle lanes or the handicapped parking spot and now he swears at and close passes ebike riders

You can only do that if you have protected bike paths literally everywhere. Otherwise you can't fine bikers for not risking their lives riding alongside impatient drivers in large trucks.

In my city there are a lot of bike path but there are always a few areas where I have to either ride on the sidewalk or risk my life because the traffic is intense and the bike lanes are either integrated into the car lanes or non existent.

That is only happening if the bike lanes are unprotected from heavy traffic. No-one would prefer a sidewalk to a nice protected bike path.

So in short a public awareness campaign would be useless as it is. Just build proper cycling infrastructure and it will solve the issue, as it has been the case in cities such as Amsterdam.
