Post your favourite liveries from railroads that are no longer with us ITT.

Pic related. I've always loved the red & grey/silver with the touch of yellow. I don't know if this came before or after the blue but I think it looks a lot better. RIP Santa Fe.

Likewise, Burlington Northern looked bretty gud when they had the black and green rather than the white and green. Picture is of a General Electric U30C (of course it's a model, not a real locomotive but it's a nice picture). Also the locomotive in the OP is a GE U28CG.

BN and ATSF of course merged into the BNSF we now know today, though I think their livery sucks so I don't like them.

Pennsylvania Railroad had some nice near all black paintjobs for a while, using only a bit of gold for text and maybe a few stripes. They also had a period where instead of black it was a maroon or merlot reddish colour with gold accents, but I think the black was better.

I do like both ATSF (warbonnet and bluebonnet) and BN (cascade green and executive) liveries, and either of them would have suited BNSF. I'm surprised they didn't continue with an ATSF scheme since Santa Fe executives dominated the new railroad and ATSF guys are prima donnas. The first BNSF livery was fine, the one that was dark green and orange. The black yellow and orange paint job sucks so bad and isn't helped by one of the most generic soulless logos in the industry.

While the other text font may be less bold and more italic,i do enjoy both they have a charm.

The stylized name gives it a like i do like with the bold scheme.

And the daylight engines are beautiful a good mix of red and orange.

They have a good amount of gothic schemes that i enjoy,like a velvet glove.

CSX had some mostly grey liveries early in its history, I don't like them as much as >>1935779 but I do appreciate that some of them had the trucks, fuel tank, pilot, and lower body of the locomotive painted blue.

I've always loved the Conrail blue and white. Some of the first train sets I'd get as a kid for Christmas had Conrail hoppers and boxcars and I guess that's why I've always liked them.

I always liked the Grand Trunk livery that was very similar to the CN livery after CN acquired it. I guess it's not entirely lost because Grand Trunk Corporation still exists as a holding company and you can still see old GT locomotives out and about, but for the most part it's no longer a railway of its own anymore.

Western Pacific is a railroad that's mostly forgotten now but they had some nice schemes. Toward the end of their life they used a dark green with orange lettering, before this one they had units that were silver and orange.

I've always liked shortline railroad livery. Unlike major railroads like CP that have the money to hire a design agency like Lippincott to make their livery and the Multimark, shortline railroads just seem to figure it out themselves. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad. It's usually just straight to the point too. Couple colours and their name or reporting mark and that was enough.

Here's one of Montréal, Maine and Atlantic Railway's liveries. They went bankrupt after crashing a freight train in a residential neighbourhood and killing 42 (possibly 47...there were a number of people who suddenly went missing and were presumed to be vaporized in the explosion) people in Lac-Mégantic. CP eventually bought up their assets and stuff after a failed come back.

More shortline stuff. Canadian Atlantic Railway, a small railroad (it was more Class 2 than shortline but they did both) that ran in New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and Maine in Amerifatland. I always liked how basic it is.

Adding onto this, railroads owned by Genesee Wyoming are an exception here, since they all have the same awful orange livery (part of the problem might be that it's similar to BNSF's liveries as noted earlier). It's not even a problem shared by other shortline holding companies, since when those have a shared livery they all use a more basic one or one that actually looks okay.

Pic related is MMA's livery from said failed comeback as Central Maine and Quebec, or at least what seems to be the most common variant of it. The roundel is tasteful

Early form of traction control. Takes speed reading from each axle to detect wheel slip and will reduce applied current to that motor f which axle is spinning faster.

All the railroads that ran on its trackage used some variant of the Bangor & Arrostook's logo except for the CMQ for that same reason, iirc CP reinstated it.
Similarly, Iowa Interstate livery and branding has very heavy Rock Island influence. But the rights to the Rock Island name went to a railroad in Mississippi somehow, it uses Rock Island's final scheme with the hexagons

The orange stripe is too tall, the name itself is too small so all the proportions are off, and the left the front end the boring shitty CSX scheme instead of doing the entire locomotive. Naturally, they didn't bother painting the fuel tank and trucks either. Piss poor

The initial stumbling was due to a) common carrier laws, and b) massively entrenched provincialism, and c) immediate need to transition away from steam and having the rug pulled out by govt for widespread electrification.

Norfolk southern has started up the heritage fleet paint jobs again. I saw this one leading a freight train looked awesome. Why not. Oddball though I’ve been seeing some Union Pacific locomotives also. Not sure if they bought them and are transiting to be repainted NS or they end up attached to ns trains for some reason.

Used to see this one swing through my old hometown once in a while in the 90s. Being a GP, it looks better than the current Southern heritage unit. Sadly got repainted to regular NS colors at some point.

Blue came later but I think they used both in parallel, not sure what made a loco have one or the other.

I have always been soft for a B&O early livery diesel. It had been elegantly tasted by aesthetic and the locomotive curves compliment a painting. I was wishing that modern locomotives painted more classy than utility aesthetics. No more style is contemporary to modern times artism.
